2 Presidential Studies The Presidency is the most studied job in the world. – Academically more works (papers, books, etc) are done about the Presidency than any job – By everyday people the Presidency is the most followed job in the world. The Presidency is the most misunderstood job in the world. – Everyday people misunderstand do not know how our system of government works and the President’s place in it. – Why do Academics screw it up?

4 Approaches to Presidential Studies Formalistic Approach Examining the laws and rules that govern the office and how they impact the President.

16 Presidential Personality Based on the belief that a person’s personality (psychology) has an impact in all aspects of their life, including job performance. Like the practice of psychology it was not readily accepted until the 1970s.

17 James David Barber A political scientist who wanted to examine how a person’s make-up impacted their job performance as President. Analyzes past president’s personalities and says we can make predictions based on personality type. Rejected by most scholars at the time However after his prediction that Nixon’s personality was not well suited to the office seemed to come true, received credibility. 1972
