How to find Topics www.zyn.com – Sign up for the SBIR Alert Service www.sbir.gov Read the full solicitations!

Phase “O” Program Partnership with Enterprise Florida Can receive up to $3,000 – Grant writing, professional services, technology development consulting – $250 application fee Submit early (at least 5 before solicitation date) Decision in 5 days Work with county contact – Orange County = Carol Ann Dykes http://www.eflorida.com/Why_Florida.aspx?id=8804

Recommended Steps Look at all agencies Keep up with solicitation dates Start with a keyword topic search (Zyn, SBIR.gov, and agency sites) Research closed solicitations Outline ideas for proposal Contact program manager (if allowed) Write Proposal Request debrief from Agency

Open Solicitations US Dept. Agriculture (SBIR) – Closes September 6 HHS/NIH (SBIR/STTR) – non AIDS topics – Closes August 5 th and December 5 th HHS/NIH (SBIR/STTR) – AIDS topics – Closes May 7 th, Sep 7 th, Jan 7 th 2013

Future (Announced) Solicitations Dept. of Defense (SBIR & STTR) – Topics released on July 26 – Accepts Proposals from August 27 – September 26 Dept. of Energy (SBIR/STTR) – Topics issued July 16, LOI Sep 4, Applications due Oct. 16 Dept. of Energy (SBIR/STTR) – Topics issued Oct. 29, LOI Dec. 17, Applications due Feb. 5

SBIR/STTR proposal tips Read the full solicitation! – Each agency is very different and some agencies have big changes between solicitations NIH – 200+ page topic list and 200+ page instructions DOE – 12 page topic list and 38 page instructions Phase I means feasibility Start company registrations early Don’t neglect the commercialization plan Give details in the work plan – List what and how work will be done Research Past Awards

SBIR/STTR proposal tips Check weekly for new solicitations Sign up for email lists Don’t rely on keyword topic searches If allowed, talk to the program managers! You should have enough research needs for a Phase I and Phase II List contract agencies as a customer

SBIR/STTR proposal tips Follow associated and most updated proposal guidelines exactly: every agency has font/margin/etc. requirements Be mindful of time deadlines Be crystal clear on your technology explanation and demonstrate a solution the agency is asking for Keep all graphics in greyscale

Reauthorization SBIR/STTR operated on continuing resolutions Reauthorization passed in Dec. 2011 – Extends program to 2017 Changes: – Funding decisions made in 90 days (excpet NIH and NSF) – Increase agency budgets (STTR to increase more) – Ph 1 may not be required for DoD, NIH, DoED

How to Register to Apply for Grants For most grants, follow this link for step by step instructions: http://grants.gov/applicants/organization_registration.jsp http://grants.gov/applicants/organization_registration.jsp 1. Obtain a DUNS number 2. Obtain a CCR/CAGE number (look up SAICS/NAIC #s) 3. Set up username & psswd 4. AOR Authorization For NIH and DOD, there are separate online portals which require additional registration; need to mail EPA proposals
