1 Graduation Plans for Students Entering High School 2015-16 House Bill 5 Impact on Graduation Plans 1

2 Texas Passed a new law called House Bill 5 that effects the rules regarding your graduation. 2

3 Inspiring minds. Shaping lives. Purpose  To identify the graduation plan options available to students who enter high school and outline the process for helping each SBISD student select the best graduation plan for them 3

4 Inspiring minds. Shaping lives. In addition to House Bill 5 T-2-4  Spring Branch ISD adopted the T-2-4 initiative in 2013. 4

5 Inspiring minds. Shaping lives. “T” is for Technical  Includes such careers as cosmetology, mechanic, military, chef, computer certification, as well as many, many others. 5

6 Inspiring minds. Shaping lives. “2” is for an Associates Degree  An associates degree is a two year degree from a community or junior college.  (Example: HCC, Lone Star College) 6

7 Inspiring minds. Shaping lives. “4” is for a 4 year degree  A 4 year degree is called a Bachelor’s Degree.  These can be obtained by graduating from a 4 year university. 7

What are the graduation plans?  Foundation Plan (22 credits)  Foundation Plan with Endorsements (26 credits)  Students who graduate on the Foundation Plan are eligible to be accepted to a 4-year university in Texas ; however, they are not eligible to be in the top 10% of their high school class. 8

Foundation Plan Requirements – 22 Credits  ELA – 4 credits  Math – 3 credits….Algebra II is not required  Social Studies – 3 credits  Science – 3 credits  Foreign Language – 2 credits  Fine Arts – 1 credit  Physical Education – 1 credit  5 Elective Credits 9

10 Inspiring minds. Shaping lives. Foundation Plan with Endorsements  We encourage all students to choose the foundation plan with an endorsement  26 Credits  Foundation Plan plus the following: ♦ 4 th Math Course ♦ 4 th Science Course ♦ Endorsement Area Coursework 10

15 Inspiring minds. Shaping lives. Distinguished Level of Achievement  A student must complete: ♦ Foundation Plan ♦ At least 1 Endorsement ♦ 4 credits in Mathematics (including Algebra II) ♦ 4 credits in Science 15

16 Inspiring minds. Shaping lives. Other Changes with House Bill 5 Testing – End of Course Exams Number of exams reduced from 15 to 5:  Algebra I  English I and II  U.S. History  Biology

17 Inspiring minds. Shaping lives. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics)  Must include Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Algebra II 17

STEM Endorsement  CTE - ( 4 credits) at least 2 in the same cluster and one advanced CTE  Computer Science - 4 credits in Computer Science  Math - Five credits in Math (Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II) plus 2 courses in math for which Algebra II is a pre- requisite.  Science - Five credits in Science ( Biology, Chemistry, and Physics) plus 2 additional Science credits.  Multi-Disciplinary - Cross Disciplinary study of Science and Math including 3 credits from a combination of courses chosen from up to two of the areas listed in : CTE, Computer Science, Math, or Science 18

Business and Industry Endorsement  Career and Technology Education Clusters (4 courses): At least 2 from same cluster plus 1 Advanced CTE  Four Courses in English including 3 in one of the following: Advanced Broadcast Journalism Advanced Journalism : Newspaper Advanced Journalism : Newspaper Public Speaking Public Speaking Debate Debate Advanced Journalism : Yearbook Advanced Journalism : Yearbook  Four Technology Applications credits 21

Arts and Humanities Endorsement  Several ways to obtain this endorsement including the following:  5 Social Studies credits Or  4 credits of foreign language OR  2 credits each of two foreign languages OR  4 credits of American Sign Language  4 credits of fine arts (band, orchestra, theater, art, choir, etc…)  4 English elective credits from : English IV, Independent Study in English, Literary Genre, Creative Writing, Researching and Technical Writing, Humanities, or Communication Applications 25

29 Inspiring minds. Shaping lives. What do I have to do to graduate?  You must earn credits to graduate.  One credit is earned for passing a full year class.  A half credit is earned for passing a semester class. 29
