3 Do Now: On the top of Pg 163 1.Where is this taking place? 2.According to the cartoon, who ordered the division? 3.Who are on the 2 sides?

4 Underneath your Do Now: Glue/tape your map on the bottom of 163 Identify the following: At the top of your map, answer this question: Who were the only 2 superpowers left standing after WWII?________________ Identify as many European countries as you can. Label the communist and non-communist countries Identify the location of the “Iron Curtain” Find Berlin!

6 On pg. 164 copy down the timelines: I will show you how to set up your notebook page Please copy the timeline off of the board. Do the Cold War Timeline.

7 1. What is the difference between a “hot” war and a “cold” war? 2. Winston Churchill coined the famous phrase “iron curtain.” What did Churchill mean by “iron curtain?” 3. What was the Baby Boom? How did it change America? What are they effects of this boom today? 4. Discuss the devastating losses Europe suffered in the war and their effects during the post-war period. 5. Discuss the ideological conflicts and differences between the United States and The Soviet Union. 6. What was the Marshall Plan? How did it shape post-war foreign policy? 7. Many times conquering armies rape the women of the conquered nation. Why is this done? 8. What was the American reaction to the Soviets obtaining nuclear power? 9. Why was there such a different reception for Korean War veterans than World War II veterans?

10 Pair-Share Top of page 167 work with a Partner What was the Cold War? What were the different ideologies of the Soviet Union and the United States during the Cold War? What were the goals of both the Soviet Union and the United States during the Cold War?

13 Directions Step 1: Choose a group leader Step 2: Leader opens the folder and hands out the reading to each group member.

14 Step 3: Leader reads aloud the “Task”

15 Step 4: Read aloud the reading (alternate every paragraph)

16 Step 5: Leader asks the group the “Discussion Questions”

17 Step 6: All group members complete the assigned “Data Sheet”

18 Step 7: When all groups have finished the Data Sheet the leader will read aloud the “Activity” and follows the directions.

19 Step 8: Leader will read aloud the “Discussion Questions”. Group members will try to answer the questions. Step 9: Leader is responsible for preparing the “Center” for the next group (put all readings back in the plastic folder and prepare the “activity”)

20 Expectations All students will participate fully in the activity. DO NOT waist time. You will have a specific amount of time to complete each learning center. If you are not the leader, DO NOT touch anything your not supposed to. DO NOT talk about other things beside the topic. This is a group activity, therefore you must DISCUSS the information before completing the Data Sheet. Do not move onto the “Activity” before you complete the DATA SHEET.
