CAUGHT ‘YA & DGP SMART STARTS

WHAT ARE CAUGHT ‘YAS? Caught ‘yas are a series of sentences from a story about Horribly Hard Middle School. These sentences contain mistakes in spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and grammatical structure. It’s your job to “catch” all the mistakes. The sentences also include words that will become our vocabulary list for testing.

WHAT ABOUT DGP? DGP stands for Daily Grammar Practice. Each day you will write the weekly sentence next to your Caught ‘ya. Each day, you will do something different to the same sentence. Mon. identify each word as a part of speech Tues. identify the function of the words in the sentence (sub. Predicate, etc) Wed. Identify clauses & sentence type & purpose Thursday – Diagram Sentence Friday – Write a sentence using Caught ‘ya names with same format.

HOW DO WE START? We will start by reading about what happened in 6th grade at Horribly Hard Middle School. We will then read the introduction to 7th grade. We will define the vocabulary words from the introduction in the vocabulary section of your binder using a format that will be explained. We will begin using each day’s sentences as Smart Starts, along with the DGP or daily grammar practice sentences.
