SAMPLE THESIS STATEMENTS George Orwell’s Animal Farm uses animal characters to present an allegory for the Russian Revolution of the early 20 th century. George Orwell uses animals and events in his novel to present an allegory of the Russian Revolution. The Russian Revolution is presented as an allegory in Animal Farm through the development of the characters of Squealer, Snowball, and Napoleon. Stalin’s 5-year Plan, use of propaganda, and terrible purges are presented in George Orwell’s allegory of the Russian Revolution, Animal Farm.

go back to find TWO CDs (quotations) for EACH of your body paragraphs. Make sure you INTRODUCE them... TS First, Orwell develops the character of Squealer to represent the propaganda of Stalin’s Russia. CD At the beginning of the story, Orwell introduces the character of Squealer, saying, “...” (16). CM This is exactly like the propaganda of Stalin’s Russia, which was managed by the government to build support for Stalin. CM Just as Stalin’s media would reinvent history by doctoring up photographs, so Squealer would reinvent events on the farm by... CD An example of when Squealer lied to the animals is when he said, “...” (#).

*2* CDs for EACH body paragraph = 6 quotations from the book (including page #s).

Type of HookExamples Quotation - General Patton once said, “If a man does his best, what else is there?” - When Hillary Clinton said “we must stop thinking of the individual and start thinking about what is best for society,” she highlighted one of the biggest issues in American politics. Anecdote - There was nothing more isolating than being alone in a foreign country, with no cell phone, no money, and no ability to speak the language. - It was Christmas of 1995 when my parents taught me a valuable lesson: always expect the unexpected. Rhetorical question - Have you ever wondered what you would do if you couldn’t fail? - What’s the one thing you can do to make the world a better place? Interesting fact - China is going to spend $850 billion to clean up its water supply over the next decade. - Ancient Egyptians used heavy eye makeup to keep evil spirits at bay and to protect their eyes from infection. Simile or metaphor - When I first went to Japan, it was like a baby bird trying to fly for the first time. - The high rate of poverty in America is the country’s elephant in the room.

Again, for this essay, mention both title and author. VERY APPROPRIATE to apply to current political situation!!

#68 – Plan for your RD = due Fri/Mon How are your RDs similar / different (you wrote one last class, one today)? Your RD for Fri/Mon will probably be a combination of the two... What strengths does each have? What do you need to do to have a RD ready for peer review Fri/Mon?????? Should you take these two RDs home & begin to type them up, combining best elements of each??? After you write the exit, read your self-selected book until the end of the period.

Daily Participation Points: 5- BYOB!! Read the whole time. Engaged! 4- Read the majority of the time. Tried! 3-Read some of the time had to be reminded. Floundered! 1-No reading, sleeping, off task. Struggled!

Select a NEW book that you have NEVER read before Books w/ movies are okay... You can even see the movie!!!... But you also need to read the book. At least 200 pages, probably more, and appropriate for your reading level You are looking for a FICTION book, or a non-fiction biography... Not a textbook, not a topic (“auto mechanics”)... You will need to discuss STORY STRUCTURE and CHARACTER. If you finish this book before the end of the quarter, you will select another book and KEEP READING There WILL be a book talk (slightly diff)... We’ll discuss later.
