Energy Efficiency Rail is on average 2-5 times more energy efficient than Road, Shipping and Aviation Through approaches including eco-driving, use of new rolling stock, and operational measures, railways continue to improve

Climate change and CO 2 emissions

Energy Consumption Train uses 1/4th (or even less with better technology) the fuel of a truck to move freight Train uses 1/8th fuel (of the most efficient car) to move passengers Railroad right of way uses only a fraction of the land needed to link a six lane highway.

Repairs Highway needs months & hundreds of pieces of huge earth moving equipments to built or renovate 1 KM A railroad uses a handful of relatively small equipments & works faster

Running Trucks and cars run out millions of tyres every year that are tossed into land felts Trains use steel wheels that last years & years and go millions of miles

Life Cycle A truck or Car lasts on an average 10 years Railroad equipments last 35 years or more

Alternative Fuel About 50% of Railroad is now running on Electric traction which is indigenously generated 10% bio-diesel is blended with HSD oil including jatropha, palm oil, karang, cotton seed oil, mahua oil & waste fish

Green Signals and Stations Manwal station on Jammu- Udhampur rail route has all its lights & fans working on solar power Northern Railway is running around 150 unreserved ticketing systems (UTS) on solar energy Solar lights are being used for lighting of signals Solar lights now available at majority of level crossing gates.

Environmental and Social Management Assessment Inter-linkages with regard to environmental impacts. Detailed environmental profile within 5 KM on either side of the proposed alignment Detailed baseline environmental monitoring of various environmental attributes Mitigation measures for environmental impacts and opportunities for enhancement for all the identified impacts. Public consultation and disclosure

Environmental management and Monitoring plan comprising of prevention, mitigation and compensation measures that should commensurate with nature, scale and potential of the anticipated environmental impacts

Palanpur-Iqbal Gadh Detour to avoid Wildlife Sanctuary Ghat Dry Valley Wildlife Sanctuary Existing Line GLD Alignment RITES FLS Alignment DFCC Alignment Legend N To JNPT To Delhi

Waste recycling FRP sleeper being made out of waste plastic found on platform Worn out sleepers being used for building of platforms Cynder (burnt coal) used in dams and filling of breaches Railway scrap (auctioned at high price) is used in buildings

Brazil - Carajas lorries carrying passengers are piggy backed by rail to avoid 900Kms of road in heart of Amazon forest

KONKAN Railways: Roll on Roll off Trains plying regularly between Roha to Kankanadi on Western Ghats

SUBURBAN AND METRO RAIL One 6 car metro rake per trip removes 16 buses /300 cars /600 two wheelers from the road. Mumbai suburban carries 6.9 million commuters/day. On 1 st August, 2011 Delhi metro had 1.8 million passengers by 2016 it will carry 4 million passengers /day. It has earned Rs. 400,000 carbon credits by saving energy through regenerative banking. Chennai metro will become functional by 2015 Kolkata metro has eased the congestion on roads
