3 Reminders:  Peer Review is on Wednesday Students must participate in peer review during the class period. You should bring at least one copy of your rough draft and a copy of the peer review sheet. I will check these at the end of class.  Essay 2 rough draft is due on Moodle Friday by noon. 1. Meet the minimum page requirements 1. Rough draft can be three pages. Final must be at least four. 2. Correct MLA format and citation (including Works Cited page) 3. Identify you’re the problem and proposed solution by highlighting/bolding/underling (pick one) 4. Peer Review 5. Turn the rough draft in on time.  Have short stories read by Monday

4 Essay 2 Outline to Follow The Outline to Follow: I. Introduction A. Introduce the problem B. Discuss those affected by the problem C. Solid Thesis = the proposed solution to the problem II. Body Cause and Effect Essay (First half of total essay) A. Discuss the background of the problem B. Discuss the causes of the problem C. Discuss the effects of the problem Transition D. Restate Thesis and discuss the proposed solution (be sure to discuss cost, resources, and manpower involved to implement it, as well as how to implement it.) Classic Argument (Second half of total essay) E. Reason #1 why this solution is the best solution for the problem F. Reason #2 G. Reason #3 H. Discuss oppositional solutions/views and develop rebuttal III. Conclusion A. Restate Thesis B. Restate Points C. Call to Action

5 B a s i c s i n a B o x RUBRIC Standards for Writing A successful problem-solution essay should clearly state a problem and explain its significance explore all aspects of the problem including its causes and effects offer one or more reasonable solutions and explain how to put them into effect use anecdotes, examples, facts, or statistics to support the proposed solutions use logical reasoning to persuade the audience

6 Introduction Example  Imagine not being able to have a warm bed, fresh food, or even to be able to escape the elements. That is the reality for many Americans. Homelessness is an epidemic that needs to halt. According to The 2013 Homeless Assessment Report, “610,042 people were homeless on a given night (Henry 1). This number needs to drastically decrease. In order to solve the homeless problem, more companies should be encouraged to offer jobs to those affected.

7 Extra Credit Opportunity : Reflection  For up to ten points to be added to essay 1. It will be graded based on quality of answers and grammar. It is not just an automatic submission grade  Must be brought to class on Feb. 29.  Reflection should be typed, at least one and a half pages, double-spaced.  The reflection should include: How did you decide on your thesis? How could you have improved your thesis? What was the best support for the thesis? What was the main thing you learned about your writing style or writing in general? What was the most difficult part of the writing process to overcome? What are some things you wish you has included or done differently to improve your essay? What do you plan to do differently for essay 2?
