3 Learning objectives To gain an understanding of the reign of Henry VII and Henry VIII Use a selection of sources to help make a conclusion about how powerful Henry Vlll was

4 Henry VII Richard III died at the Battle of Bosworth, ending the War of the Roses (fought between the houses of York and Lancaster, both of which had a rose as their emblem) and his victor became King Henry VII. He was the first Tudor monarch. He was a member of the House of Lancaster but by marrying Elizabeth of York he united the houses of York and Lancaster. His claim to the throne was shaky and there were uprisings against him (1487 and 1491). But he taxed the nobility heavily and broke their power, they could not have their own private armies, and when he died he left the royal treasury full of money. The Tudor rose combined both the red and white rose. Clip – 8 mins

The future of the Tudor name seemed assured and the future for England looked glorious….
