4 Part 1: GET SORTED Ensure you have Google Earth, MS Word, and a browser window open on your computer Locate the Pohangina township in Google Earth by using the search box in the top left corner Locate the Pohangina River, which runs through the valley (tilt the orientation by clicking down on the click wheel of the mouse and dragging the mouse backwards to see the valley in 3D) Create a path that represents the river from its headwaters/source at 40° 2'54.22"S 175°58'48.50"E (copy and paste those coordinates into Google Earth’s search box) to where it finishes. The river finishes where it joins the Manawatu River in the town of Ashhurst. In which direction does the river flow..? How long is the river? Save the path into your MY PLACES with an appropriate name; adjust the colour and opacity to suit Save the MY PLACES into your computer by right clicking on it (in the left pane) and selecting SAVE AS. You will do this each time you finish a session – this is very important!

5 Part 2a: JUST ADD WATER Now you are going to create a polygon to represent the area(s) which will become flooded. We are going to create two areas which we will later compare against each other, to see which one will be the worst affected. The first area is called “north section” and will be the section of the Pohangina River from Willowbank to Green Hill, whilst the second section, called “south section” will be from Green Hill to Raumai. These places are visible on the topomap website (see next step) Go to www.topomap.co.nz and search and locate Pohangina (check you have the correct place by using Google Earth). Zoom in so that on the scale bar on the right you are under ‘Topo50’ and not ‘Topo250’www.topomap.co.nz Locate GR400500. This is the tributary where our hypothetical floodwater will be coming from, and thus where the flood in the Pohangina River will begin. Click on the COORDINATES tab on the left to drop a green marker onto the map Drag the green marker onto this location, and notice that its coordinates will appear in boxes on the left (Be careful not to read the coordinates of the pointer as this will move around as you move your mouse!). Copy and paste these coordinates into google earth, separated by a comma, and hit enter. It should take you to the same place. Mark this place with a pin so that you can find it easily, calling it “North section top”. Check that the location is correct by putting 40 10 14.19"S, 175 48 33.77"E into Google Earth – this is the top point Do the same for the following places, and name them appropriately in Google Earth: – GR383480 (the southern extent/bottom of the ‘”North” section and top of the “South” section) – GR375455 (the southern extent of the “South” section). What cultural feature is located here..?

6 Part 2b: JUST ADD WATER Now draw a polygon shape for each of these two sections that will show the area of land inundated (covered) by the flood. The top and bottom extents of your polygon will be determined by the coordinates above (so have them pinned in Google Earth as placemarks before you begin), whilst the sides will form a line which is 6m higher than the height of the river, on either side, to show the area that will become flooded. To do this easily: – Draw a polygon which roughly covers the river for each section, starting and finishing at the right placemarks. Don’t worry about the elevation at this stage, just get the shape right – Now edit each of the points on the polygon so that it shows a 6m flood. To do this, take the first point and hover it over the river - observe what elevation it is at the bottom right of the screen – Then drag the point out at a right angle (90 degrees) to river, until the elevation is 6m higher (eg if your river elevation is 100m, drag it until it shows 107). Then release the mouse button – Continue this with each of your polygon points – go down one side of the river and up the other – Have enough points (mouse clicks) to be able to follow the shape of the river but not so many that you will spend hours moving each individual point – Change the colour, opacity, and label of your polygons to something appropriate, and save In each of your two shapes you must locate and label (by using the pin/placemark tool in Google Earth) three cultural phenomena which will be affected by the floodwaters. You may use two of the same type of thing in each of the two shapes. Take a screenshot of your polygons and labelled cultural phenomena and paste them into Word. In this word doc ensure that – orientation is set to landscape – all text (in text boxes) is set to font sz 7 (as it will be blown up to A3 if printed) – The title “Spatial Analysis of a hypothetical 6m flood event in the Pohangina Valley, Manawatu, NZ” and your name appears in a text box somewhere on the page. Crop if necessary, and make sure it meets the criteria of F.A.C.K.T.S. Do not include irrelevant information. Create annotations to explain what the image is showing, and the significance of what you have chosen to include (ie reasons why they are important). This information will be used to write your final report.

7 Part 3: THE AFTERMATH In this stage we are going to look at what has been affected by the flood, and what we can suggest we do to minimise the effects of it/plan for future flooding scenarios. It is worth considering that a flood of 6m is entirely feasible and that a plan needs to be in place to reduce the damage to livelihoods in areas such as the Pohangina Valley. An annotation is needed for each of the ‘Google Earth elements’ on your map. You will do these in word by creating text boxes (INSERT > TEXT BOX > SIMPLE TEXT BOX) and connecting them with arrows or lines (INSERT > SHAPES > ARROW or LINE) Each annotation must clearly describe what the element is (eg a major road), how you have manipulated Google Earth in order to show this, how it will be effected, and what this means/how it is significant (Eg will disrupt the flow of traffic in and out of town) Make sure that you have a clear explanation of the flooded regions also, as this is the crucial part and you need to be able to clearly see what will be inundated and what will be safe In your annotations, include both the short term and long term effects All of the steps above are used to create annotated maps in a word document which will become part of your final presentation and write-up. Make sure that all of your maps follow the necessary conventions, and that your annotations are relevant and concise. This all should fit on 1 landscape page in word, with a small font, so be creative in your layout!
