How much is too much? Usain Bolt is regarded as the superstar of world athletics; he is charismatic, funny and above all an exceptional athlete. But what happens if confidence is too high or indeed too low? Usain How would this affect your performance in your chosen sport? TOO LOWTOO HIGH CONFIDENCE HesitationArrogance - Discipline Issues IntimidationError Strewn Performance ScaredUnder Train/Prepare Low Self BeliefLoss of Concentration
7
How would you feel? The All Black Haka An intimidating pre-match/war ritual, would you respond positively or negatively to this?
8
Fear and Anger Fear and Anger usually have negative connotations, however… Fear of failure can become a real positive; an athlete with positive fear will ensure he/she prepares probably for the upcoming event. Fear can push an athlete to their physical, emotional and mental limits, often resulting in an outstanding performance. Anger, if channelled correctly can also result in an outstanding performance full of controlled aggression and determination. Corrales vs. Castillo Diego Corrales produced one of the greatest sporting comebacks in history; displaying incredible character and resilience, full of positive and controlled anger.
9
The Negative Effects of Anger Clearly anger can result in a negative outcome. Potential issues: » Sending's Off » Point’s Deduction » Time Penalty » Match Bans etc. Think of a time where you reacted negatively to a situation, what were the consequences on performance and how did you feel?
10
Gathering Data Example 1 Emotional Performance Checklist Circle the number that best applies to you in each column. 1= Very Low 5= Very High The following examples should be part of a skill, fitness or tactics based observation schedule. Emotional features underpins an effective performance. Outstanding athletes must have confidence and belief to excel Before PerformanceDuring PerformanceAfter Performance Confidence1 2 3 4 5 Optimism1 2 3 4 5 Nerves1 2 3 4 5
11
Gathering Data Example 2 Emotional Training Diary (Excellent) - Swimming DateFeelings before the event Feelings during the event Feeling after the eventI think I need to try to... 18/08I feel nervous. I have yet to feature in a competitive race. The other boys are quicker off the blocks and have a much stronger leg kick. I was so nervous off the blocks and made a slow start. I was so worried about catching up that I forgot about race pacing. I felt pretty positive as I swam 3 rd out of 6, my best result to date. I was annoyed that I attacked straight off the blocks as this was not my plan and I faded badly in the final length Not watch the rest warm up, focus purely on my performance. Keep composed and remember my race pacing
12
Gathering Data Example 3 Disciplinary Record No indiscipline Low Level Court/pitch violation Poor Challenge SANCTION: Verbal Warning Medium Level Bad Language Serious violation Dangerous Challenge SANCTION: Booking, Sin Bin, Points Deduction High Level Extreme Language Violence Dangerous Play SANCTION: Red Card, Removal, Forfeit Wk 1 Wk 3 Wk 5 Wk 7
13
Gathering Data Example 4 Film your performance in your chosen activity. Note down any times you experienced confidence, optimism or anger. Were there any moments of panic in your performance? » How did this affect you? Were there any moments of anger in your performance? » How did this affect you?
14
A reminder… For Data Collection to be valid/appropriate it must be… 1.Accurate – Knowledgeable Observer and not a one off – eliminate the luck factor 2.Simplistic – Easy for the observer and performer to understand 3.Retrievable – For comparisons before and after
15
Approaches 1. Visualisation and Mental Rehearsal Imagining positive outcomes – winning, man of the match performance, outstanding goal, game winning tackle, remaining calm regardless of pressures etc. All thoughts must be positive and controlled 2. Positive Self Talk Set phrases which you run over in your mind; allowing you to stay calm in challenging situations Penalty example, “low and hard to the goalkeepers right = goal” Booking example, “it was a foul, just accept the referee’s decision”
16
Monitoring and Evaluating Check and re-check methods of collecting data » Emotional Performance Checklist » Emotional Training Diary » Disciplinary Analysis » Video Analysis Monitoring should take place at the beginning, midpoint and conclusion of any development programme
17
Monitoring & Evaluating The Emotional Factor Possible difficulties when monitoring and evaluating the impact of the emotional factor Accuracy of information – ticking/selecting boxes (Truth) Was the training diary evaluative? What actions did you take to improve? People can feel different on a day to day basis, confidence can come and go. Differing life challenges will affect answers (personal issues) Challenge differentials – an athlete may feel different depending on opponent(s), event, environment or time of competition.
