MOMBASA COUNTY GOV’T INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITIES, DEC.2013

Kenya Initiatives  Energy and Infrastructure growth play a large role in Vision 2030 as they are key ingredients to economic development  Transmission development underway to facilitate electricity movement throughout from the County to Lamu and nationwide  Vision 2030 Flagship Projects with large energy requirements in or near Mombasa County are: Second container terminal and a free port at the Mombasa Standard gauge railway(Juba-Lamu) launched Lamu Port Resort Cities (Isiolo, Kilifi and Ukunda)

Key Information  Mombasa County Population 1.2M,Area about 300 sq.km  Doing Business 2012 Ranked 6 th out of 13 Municipalities.  As per the National statistics, only 16% of population currently has access to electricity  Electricity demand expected to increase ~11%/yr as a result of rural and urban electrification, population and economic growth  Current installed generation capacity is approximately 1,600 MW  Expected to increase to 3,000 MW by 2015 and to 17,000 MW by 2030

ENERGY SECTOR

RENEWABLE ENERGY  The County of Mombasa is desirous of promoting wider adoption and use of renewable energy technologies to enhance their role in the country’s energy supply mix.  The Deployment of Renewable Energy will serve dual purpose: A)increase the energy available to the grid B)as well as to be a source of Revenue for the County.

Solar Resource  As per the Kenya SWERA report the coastal area of Kenya has the highest solar irradiation in the range of 2000 – 2300kWh per square metre.  Hotel and hospitality Industry individually spend between 1million and 3 million a month on POWER bills.

Solar Resource  The SOS children’s village in Mombasa has a classic pilot for entities to study which has a capacity of 6000kw. It is the 2 nd biggest in the country. Classic Case of Embracing Feed in Tariff to the grid.Power Cost reduction by 75%.  Manufacturing within Special Economic Zones (SEZ) of the Solar Panel to access the wider regional Market in East and Central Africa (120 million Market)

50-100MW Solar Farm  Development and Construction of a grid connected 50 Megawatts (MW) Solar photovoltaic (PV) in Mwakirunge, Mombasa County on a turnkey basis.  Others: Solar Street Lighting, Water Pumping etc

Identified Project Location Located in Mwakirunge, N. of Mombasa County Headquarters

Wind Likewise, there exists a national wind regime database with the national government, which shows the sites with adequate wind through out the year to enable erection of wind farms. Mombasa has sites onshore and offshore presenting opportunities for investors to invest in winds farms in this sector.

Waste to Energy  The County Produces Municipal Waste between 800-1000 tonnes per day.  Presents an opportunity for converting the waste to energy.

Power Sector  Mombasa county hosts the Several Thermal Power Generation Companies with a total Combined generating capacity of 300MW.  The Government of Kenya Plans to generate 5000 Mw with majority of the mix being through Coal, LNG and geothermal.  There is currently an EOI out by the Ministry of Energy to invite investor to build and run a LNG fired power plant for between 700 and 800 MW inviting investments in building the plants and floating storage.  Coal power plants in Mui basin (Kitui) and LAMU as well as Kilifi planned hence the need of a coal handling facility for both the import and export.  Weakness in the distribution System, hence the need to upgrade the grid.

OIL AND GAS SECTOR

Upstream Sector  The Mombasa County covers several square kilometers with exploration blocks split between on shore exploration blocks and off shore. (both deep water and shallow waters) and the blocks are L17, L19, L18 for on shore and the off shore oil blocks are L9, L10A, L10B (further south sharing borders with Kwale county), L11A, L11B,, L27, L28 and L26. Some are deep water exploration blocks based on extension of Kenya’s territorial borders from the coast line from approx. 220 nautical miles to 350 nautical miles.  Upstream exploration companies are East Africa Exploration company, CAMAC Energy, Rift Energy, Ophir Energy, Pancontinental Oil, Taipan Resources, Apache group and the BG group.

Other Opportunities-Upstream  Other investment opportunities as a result are in logistical support services, suppliers of various products and services, consultancy and specialized services alike.

Mid/Downstream Sector  The Kenya Petroleum Refineries Limited is the only and oldest refinery in the region with a capacity of 4 million tonnes per annum (approximately 83,000 tpd).  Upgrade and expansion of the refinery to handle the existing oil and gas finds, storage terminals for the crude including possibility of a floating storage for gas, an SBM and jetty to allow bigger vessels to discharge and load products.

INFRASTRUCTURE SECTOR

Opportunities  Bridges  Expansion of Existing Nyali Bridge  2 nd Bridge in the Mainland North  Multi-Storey Parking in the CBD.  Central Bus Park in Miritini, Shanzu and Shika Adabu  Likoni Tunnel or Bridge ???  Water Transport System
