4 Tinga Tinga painting What is Tingatinga  Tingatinga paintings are named after Edward Saidi Tingatinga who developed the style in the 1960s. It is based on the wildlife, landscape and patterns of Africa. Also images are drawn from folklore stories and legends. The Tingatinga style  Is playful, colourful and full of patterns and lines  Is usually painted onto masonite, a type of hardboard  He originally used bicycle paint which is thick and slow to dry  Tingatinga was killed by police after being mistaken for an escaping thief in 1972. After his death, his former students continued to paint in his style. Over time they have developed the art from painting one animal to groupings of animals and other decorative images to fill the entire canvas.
