3 There are 3 basic categories of elements: METALSMETALLOIDSNON-METALS Most of the elements are metals. Metals are found on the left side.

4 The 7 metalloids: B, Si, Ge, As, Sb, Te, (Po): Boring Silly Germans Are Antigonizing Telephone Poles.

5 Non-metals are found on the right.

6 There is one unique element: H – H is a non-metal, that is found on the “metal side” of the chart. H is unique.

7 Physical Properties Metals –Shiny luster –Silver/gray color, except gold and copper –Solid, except mercury (liq) –Malleable (bendable) –Ductile (can be made into wires) –Good conductors of heat and electricity –High density –High melting points Non-metals –Dull –Different colors –Solids and gases, except bromine(liq) –Brittle –Poor conductors of heat and electricity –Lower density –Lower melting pt

8 Chemical Properties Metals –Have 1 to 3 val el- –Lose val el- –Form oxides that are basic –Low EN (electronegativities) Non-metals –Have 4+ val el- –Gain val el- –Form oxides that are acidic –High EN
