2 John Quincy Adams 6th President of the U.S. (1825-1829) Diplomat, Senator and Congressional Representative Helped negotiate the Treaty of Ghent (ended War of 1812) Sought to modernize America

3 Henry Clay One of most influential political figures of his era; served as Representative, Senator and Secretary of State “The Great Compromiser” – sought to resolve issues between North and South without neglecting the developing West Proposed the “American System” – high tariffs to protect American Goods

4 John C Calhoun South Carolina politician – advocated for states’ rights, limited government, free trade and slavery Spoke against Tariff of 1828 saying states had the right to nullify (cancel) unconstitutional federal laws – led to Nullification Crisis Believed slavery was essential for a civilized life in the South

5 Abraham Lincoln 16th President of the U.S. (1861- 1865) Key speeches- Lincoln-Douglas Debates (1858) First Inaugural Address (1861) Emancipation Proclamation (1862) Gettysburg Address (1863) Second Inaugural Address (1865) Believed the Union must be preserved at all costs Assassinated in April 1865

6 Jefferson Davis President of the Confederate States of America Many felt he was a weak leader; reluctant to delegate

7 Ulysses S Grant Commander of Union forces during the Civil War Accepted Lee’s surrender at the Appomattox Court House U.S. President (1869- 77) – Grant was a brilliant general, but weak president

8 Robert E Lee Commander of the Confederate Army during the Civil War Career military man and shrewd battlefield commander Did not want the South to secede, but would not fight against his native Virginia

9 William Carney Sergeant William Carney, an African American, was awarded a medal for his role during the attack on Fort Wagner, South Carolina

10 Philip Bazaar a Chilean immigrant living in Massachusetts who joined the Union Navy at New Bedford, Massachusetts. Bazaar and his comrades were awarded the Medal of Honor for their actions.

11 Stonewall Jackson Confederate general who served under Robert E. Lee. Known for his bravery and tactical skill.
