South East Strategic Regional Coastal Monitoring Programme – Annual Review Meeting, November 2009 Satellite Data for Coastal Monitoring Trevor Burton Fugro-BKS Fugro Water Services

South East Strategic Regional Coastal Monitoring Programme – Annual Review Meeting, November 2009 False-Colour Infrared Imagery Since 2008, aerial photography undertaken as part of the project has been acquired using digital aerial survey cameras.

South East Strategic Regional Coastal Monitoring Programme – Annual Review Meeting, November 2009 Satellite InSAR Data - Introduction InSAR involves the interferometric processing of the phase component of satellite SAR images of the Earth's surface to quantify surface displacements occurring between image acquisitions. InSAR techniques are capable of remotely detecting millimetres to metres of deformation spanning months, years and even decades, covering specific sites or wide areas (1000s km 2 ) across the world.

South East Strategic Regional Coastal Monitoring Programme – Annual Review Meeting, November 2009 Amplitude and Phase Amplitude Phase The satellite measures the intensity (amplitude) and phase (0 – 360 degrees) of the return signal.

South East Strategic Regional Coastal Monitoring Programme – Annual Review Meeting, November 2009 InSAR Satellite takes image on date 1Satellite takes image on date 2 Ground subsides Date 1 Date 2 Extra part of the phase cycle is directly related to any change in topography

South East Strategic Regional Coastal Monitoring Programme – Annual Review Meeting, November 2009 motionmap UK is a unique geographic dataset revealing millimetric ground and structure motion trends across the United Kingdom. Derived through processing of hundreds of satellite radar images acquired by European Space Agency satellites between 1992 and 2002. Contains millions of individual motion measurement points, each of which has an associated average annual motion rate. Measurement points correspond to specific features on the ground, typically man-made (e.g. buildings, bridges, walls, piers) but also natural (e.g. rocky outcrops). The dataset identifies motion but does not diagnose cause. Engineering decisions are still required. motionmap UK

South East Strategic Regional Coastal Monitoring Programme – Annual Review Meeting, November 2009 Motionmap UK uses archive radar data and is proven to detect motion and movement in the built environment where natural persistent scatters are more prevalent. A key area for current development of the science is involved in the detection of similar motion in the soft engineering environment. To compensate for the potential shortage of natural persistent scatters, artificial scatterers can be deployed in study areas for ongoing monitoring.

South East Strategic Regional Coastal Monitoring Programme – Annual Review Meeting, November 2009 motionmap NL Derived from over 400 SAR images between 2004 and 2008. Contains over 2.5 million individual motion points

South East Strategic Regional Coastal Monitoring Programme – Annual Review Meeting, November 2009 Summary Utilise satellite InSAR techniques to... Reveal previously unknown motion trends Reveal subtle and severe motion trends Reveal the spatial extent of motion features Reveal the magnitude of motion features Reveal long-term stability of areas, sites or features Highlight areas, sites or features that require further investigation Establish motion ‘environmental baseline’ against which future changes can be compared Complement conventional ground-based assessments Provides precise, cost-effective data Integrate with other datasets (e.g. geology, land use, infrastructure, water) to provide a more complete picture of systems Improve risk assessment practices and demonstrate the effectiveness of hazard mitigation www.fugro.com/survey/geospatial/insarsurvey.asp
