Commercially available technologies can also play an important role in addressing proliferation concerns Material protection, control, and accounting (MPC&A) is a fundamental pillar of nonproliferation 2

U.S. President Barack Obama and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev sign the new START treaty in April 2010 3

The Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT) (1970) brought nuclear weapons states and non-nuclear weapons states together in a mutually reinforcing arms control pact, with joint pledges to further the nonproliferation of nuclear weapons, disarmament of those weapons, and the peaceful uses of nuclear energy Further steps currently in progress toward strengthening nuclear arms control will be the entry-into-force of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) and the negotiation of a Fissile Material (Cut-off) Treaty (FMCT) 4
