1 Technical Division Overview: Nonproliferation & Arms Control Mission To promote and advance the research, development and application of effective technologies to control proliferation risks and in support of arms control treaties and agreements. To educate and provide outreach to the public about international arms control and nonproliferation issues. Nonproliferation & Arms Control Division 1

2 Technical Division Overview: Nonproliferation & Arms Control Nonproliferation is any effort (bilateral agreement, international treaty or organization) that prevents the spread of weapons of mass destruction (nuclear, chemical and biological) What is Nonproliferation? Commercially available technologies can also play an important role in addressing proliferation concerns Material protection, control, and accounting (MPC&A) is a fundamental pillar of nonproliferation 2

3 Technical Division Overview: Nonproliferation & Arms Control What is Arms Control? Arms control is any multilateral, bilateral, or unilateral measure taken to reduce or control a weapons arsenal. U.S. President Barack Obama and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev sign the new START treaty in April 2010 3

4 Technical Division Overview: Nonproliferation & Arms Control What is Arms Control? The Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT) (1970) brought nuclear weapons states and non-nuclear weapons states together in a mutually reinforcing arms control pact, with joint pledges to further the nonproliferation of nuclear weapons, disarmament of those weapons, and the peaceful uses of nuclear energy Further steps currently in progress toward strengthening nuclear arms control will be the entry-into-force of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) and the negotiation of a Fissile Material (Cut-off) Treaty (FMCT) 4

5 Technical Division Overview: Nonproliferation & Arms Control Function Provides a forum for information exchange on all aspects of nonproliferation and arms control and technology through: - Meetings - Workshops - Publications Performs ad hoc timely studies and participates on the editorial board of the Journal for Nuclear Materials Management (JNMM) Organizes relevant sessions and presentations for the INMM Annual Meeting Nonproliferation & Arms Control Division 5
