2  You should be able to identify and describe the roles of a sport and exercise massage professional along with the benefits.  This will form part of your assessment for both the P1and P2 criteria.  Discuss target grades after reading through criteria requirements. University?  Could lead to a Governing body Award VTCT – night class here at the college.  Could help support you whilst studying at HE!

3  Potential earnings as a masseuse??  Full body £35.00 takes 60 minutes  Legs or back £15.00 takes 20 minutes  If you completed 3 full body massages and 4 leg massages a week how much could you earn in a month (4 weeks to a month)  £165 a week £660 a month.  17hrs 20 minute work for £660.00

6  List as many roles and responsibilities that you think a sports masseuse should have.  Switch lists with the person sat next to you.  Count up how many they have and circle any spellings errors found.  Hand back for corrections to be made.  In 3 groups complete the above task again and present it to the rest of the class.  Each poster will be graded and the group will receive an award!!

7  Look and be professional at all times  Always practice the highest standards of personal and environmental hygiene  Be polite and courteous to all clients and handle all situations with tact and diplomacy  Protect the health and safety of their clients  Treatment suited to the needs of the client providing the highest standards.  Be punctual and refrain from cancelling appointments at the last minute  Give their clients their undivided attention with no interruptions or distractions.

8  Respect the clients boundaries with regards to privacy, disclosure, and beliefs – ensure ultimate confidentiality and with no gossip.  Provide draping and treatment that insures the safety, comfort and privacy of the client.  Exercise the right to refuse to treat any person or part of the body for just reasonable cause.  Ensure that all records are up to date and complete within 48 hours and that they are accurate, informative and signed by both client and therapist.  Continually improve knowledge of the human body and massage skills by attending and participating in professional courses.

9  Once qualified, a massage therapist will normally become a member of a professional association, Federation of Holistic Therapists and Sports Massage Association are just two examples.  Members are bound by the code of ethics set by these professional associations.  Therapist may be required to perform a range of treatments.  May need to deal with injured and recovering athletes therefore need to know about;  Strapping, stretching, resistance training, and first aid.  Modalities such as heat, ice and electrotherapy.

10  The sports massage professional can be placed under the three following headings.  Knowledge, treatments applied, types of business setting.  Furthermore, apart from preparing athletes for competition, (warm-ups and cool downs) then dealing with any symptoms or injuries they can also treat other people who are active but not athletes.

11  The aim of the session was to be able to identify and describe the role of the sports massage professional.  Can you?  You can take a picture of your poster and present it in a spider diagram firstly identifying the roles and responsibilities.  Then, give a few sentences to describe each.

12  What are the types of work that a massage professional will undertake?  What types of activities?  What types of treatments?  What are electrotherapy modalities?  What knowledge is required?  In groups take a topic each, research and prepare a short powerpoint.

13  Promote healing  Prevent injury  Identify potential areas of injury – tight tissue…  Prepare for training or competition  Aid recovery  Liaise with other healthcare people such as coaches and trainers.  Enhance overall sporting performance

14  Activities can include – stretching athletes  Pre, inter and post event activities  Relaxation massages  Go out in situ, work from home, leisure centres..

15  First-aid  Taping and strapping  Heat treatments – paraffin wax, infrared, sauna..  Manipulation -knowledge of A&P! massage gently manipulates physio for anything deeper.  Electrotherapy modalities – ultra sound, interferential therapy, tens and laser.  Knowledge required ++ some will relieve pain as they are analgesic. Some stimulate MF during rehab and some speed up healing

16  Anatomy qualifications  Add on short courses for CPD  Knowledge of the sport to possible injury prevention.  Give specific supporting examples from typical roles!!
