11 www.maindata.info MAINDATA Mobile TV, Mobile Video Streaming and Broadband Portable Internet DVB-H accomplishes Reception to Mobile Handsets by modifying DVB-T transmission by adding: 1) Time Slicing 2) MPE FEC 3) Time Interleaving 4) 4k COFDM mode These features are incorporated in different elements of the network. How DVB-H achieves Mobile reception ?
13
12 www.maindata.info MAINDATA Mobile TV, Mobile Video Streaming and Broadband Portable Internet DVB-H enables delivery of Mobile TV (news, sport, music) to a light, battery powered mobiles handsets- like GSM phones. DVB-H channel bandwidth can range from 2 to 10 Mbps while single small screen TV channel bandwidth H.264 encoded is roughly 200 kbps. So DVB-H can carry 10- 50 TV services over a single transport stream. DVB-H is low-cost delivery mechanism for mobile TV services to complement existing mobile phone services. DVB-H can be broadcast over DVB-T networks launched already Mobile TV presents a new media wave. Why DVB-H ?
14
13 www.maindata.info MAINDATA Mobile TV, Mobile Video Streaming and Broadband Portable Internet 3G networks are unable to accommodate large numbers of users as well as provide high enough bitrate for TV services (HSDPA enhancement is required). DVB-H requires moderate investment to existing network It is vital for mobile operators to seize first- mover advantage and take a proactive role in defining the future value chain. Why DVB-H ?
15
14 www.maindata.info MAINDATA Mobile TV, Mobile Video Streaming and Broadband Portable Internet There are numerous trials and demos of DVB-H networks around the world in 2004, 2005: USA, Pittsburg Berlin Finland Singapore UK O2 Australia Spain Switzerland Hungary First commercial deployments are expected in 2006 when variety of DVB-H handsets will be available. DVB-H services launch timing

15 www.maindata.info MAINDATA Mobile TV, Mobile Video Streaming and Broadband Portable Internet MD DVB-H & 3GPP Platform for Mobile Television & Video Streaming DVB-H is suited for Mobile TV IP Multicast services 3GPP – 3 rd Generation Partnership GSM 3GPP networks are suited for Video Streaming – Unicast These services are compliant to each other. While Television services does not make sense to broadcast via multiple Unicast connections but rather via DVB-H, video-on- demand or private video streaming (e.g. home supervision) does not make sense to transmit over DVB- H network but rather via Unicast 3GPP network. Both standards have a common IP layer both use RTP (IP Real Time Protocol) and similar ESG (electronic service guide) and DRM (Digital Right Management). Integration of both networks makes perfect sense to simplify Mobile Service Provider operation and content management.

18 www.maindata.info MAINDATA Mobile TV, Mobile Video Streaming and Broadband Portable Internet Time Slicing – To prolong a battery life - a key DVB-H feature ! Mobile DVB-H Handsets has to be able to operate for at least 90 minutes with a goal of 3 hours. When transmission is split to time slices, handset can perform most energy demanding operations like reception, FEC etc, only during a fraction of time, only when service for given handset is transmitted. Thus time slicing provides effective method for reducing power consumption. Thus by time slicing handset can save 90 % of energy. time bandwidth

20 www.maindata.info MAINDATA Mobile TV, Mobile Video Streaming and Broadband Portable Internet Time Interleaving – Impuls Noise protection Time Interleaving is currently implemented in Japanese ISDB-T standard and European DAB (Digital Audio Broadcast) standard This feature effectively protects signal against impuls noise. Both of these standards were better than DVB-T for mobile reception. By adopting this technique into DVB-H standard it becomes adequately suitable for mobile transmission.

22 www.maindata.info MAINDATA Mobile TV, Mobile Video Streaming and Broadband Portable Internet 4k mode - to fill a gap between 2k and 8k Currently DVB-T standardizes either 2k or 8 k mode (# of subcarriers). 2k is more robust for mobile transmission while 8 k has higher bitrate and larger coverage area. ISDB-T currently supports 4k mode which seems to be better trade-off for mobile services. Source: TeamCast, Mr.Gerard Faria
