The Cold War The Cold War - from 1940s - early 1990s, ideological conflict between the United States and other western aligned countries and the Soviet Union and communist nations.

Start of the Cold War Yalta Conference - meeting of there main allies to discuss shape of post WW II world. Decide that… 1.USSR will enter war against Japan less than 3 months after Germany surrenders 2.USSR will receive reparations from Germany 3.Germany will be divided into occupation zones

Occupied Germany Where do you think conflict was most likely to break out between the USSR and America? Explain.

The Iron Curtain From Stettin in the Baltic to Trieste in the Adriatic an "iron curtain" has descended across the Continent. Behind that line lie all the capitals of the ancient states of Central and Eastern Europe. Warsaw, Berlin, Prague, Vienna, Budapest, Belgrade, Bucharest and Sofia; all these famous cities and the populations around them lie in what I must call the Soviet sphere, and all are subject, in one form or another, not only to Soviet influence but to a very high and in some cases increasing measure of control from Moscow. -Winston Churchill, 1946 Iron Curtain - symbolic boundary between East and West Europe during the Cold War Why do you think Churchill called the divide in Europe an “iron curtain”?

How did the U.S. Confront the Soviets in Europe? Truman Doctrine - President Truman’s rule to support country’s that reject communism in effort to keep communism from spreading –Containment Policy - plan to not let Communism spread to other countries 1. Why would some European countries choose to be Communist? HINT: Think about…conditions in Europe after the war, who was the great European enemy during the war? 2. What can the United States do to keep all of Europe from becoming Communist? The Marshall Plan - money and material given to European countries in an efforts to keep them from turning to communism

The man of the bike represents… What’s keeping Europe moving forward? Who’s helping Europe? How can the American taxpayer help Europe? What is the goal of the American taxpayer? How does the creator of this cartoon feel about the Marshall plan? “He’s finally getting the hang of it.”
