30 America: Obesity is a serious health concern. During 2009–2010, more than one-third of adults, or about 78 million people, were obese. Nearly one of five youths aged 2–19 years was obese. 31 Of 22 industrialized countries, the U.S. has the highest obesity statistics: 2/3 of Americans over age 20 are overweight Nearly 1 in 3 Americans over age 20 are obese Overweight and obesity lead to adverse metabolic effects on blood pressure, cholesterol, triglycerides and insulin resistance and increase risk of disease and cancers.
