January 20, 2015 ENGR B47 Lecture#1 Introduction to Introduction to Engineering and Design

Helping Me With Names 2 Name as it appears on roll sheet How you preferred to be addressed (and possibly how to pronounce) Favorite line from your favorite movie

Wait List Considerations If spots open up, those on the “top” of the list take their place Will not take over the standard amount for safety concerns (crowded labs are dangerous labs) I will wait until the end of Monday’s lab section for changes then I will close the list If you need another class, a section of INDR B12 opened yesterday 3

Syllabus and Course Website Paper copy of syllabus distributed –Check course website for backup / update aderhold.weebly.com/intro -or- Google “aderhold weebly” ➙ click first hit ➙ click the book Regular updates with slides / notes Instructor reserves the right to make alterations 4

This is not your instructor Or is he?....

Dean Kamen Only “famous” engineer I can think of Why is that? –Engineers work on teams predominantly...“if you want to go far, go together” –Engineers not glamorous –Technology so ubiquitous it has no appeal Vaccinations save millions Humans fly everyday Your smartphone!

Dean Kamen (and DEKA Research) “Luke Arm” Prosthetic iBOT Wheelchair “Slingshot” Water Purifier

Dean Kamen (and DEKA Research)

It’s not just about being prolific, it’s about the attitude... “Don't tell me it's impossible, he says, tell me you can't do it. Tell me it's never been done... the only things we really know are Maxwell's equations, the three laws of Newton, the two postulates of relativity, and the periodic table. That's all we know that's true. All the rest are man's laws.” -Dean Kamen J.H. Richardson “How Dean Kamen's Magical Water Machine Could Save the World” Esquire November 2008

Bakersfield College is asking you to take the same mindset Don’t wait for an invitation Don’t wait for permission Don’t assume that because you don’t know anyone who’s done it that you can or shouldn’t Be like Dean Kamen and treat the universe like your toolbox (and playground)

What Is Engineering? “The use of scientific principles and mathematical tools to create value” - Patrick Aderhold Examples? Software engineer creating algorithms for motion at Pixar Civil engineer building a bridge across San Francisco Bay Chemical engineering converting petroleum into gasoline Mechanical engineer building a engine with higher efficiency

Don’t other people create value? –Yes, never as reliably or quantifiably as engineers Why don’t more people do it? –Very challenging to get degree –Not as prestigious as some other professions Is it worth the trouble? –Could be: tend to have high compensation –Tend to find jobs and keep them –Gives you many avenues if you’re not in love with first job

What to Expect from This Class Lots of group work Lots of problem-solving (in lab portion) More writing than you thought Occasionally less structure than you’d prefer Take advantages of the opportunities 13
