Helicopter Emergency Medical Services Waging the Battle Within Vanessa Rodgers vrodgers@hawaii.edu

Learners and Learning Environment  Adult learners with an aviation or nursing background.  Large hotel conference room  Morning and afternoon snacks with beverages for adult physical comfort  Consists of a one day workshop

Content – Curricular Relevance  Professional flight discipline is essential in all high risk aviation operations. The Helicopter EMS industry is experiencing higher than normal mishaps due to various human factor issues.  This lesson exceeds industry standards set by the FAA, and NTSB.

Content – Learning Objectives  Introduction to professional discipline – what does it look like?  Understand why it is important  Recognize the impacts and consequences of poor discipline  Learn the specific threats  Strategy to fight the battle – and win  Case study analysis to summarize and link key principles

Content – Materials, Media & Resources  Ten tables with one computer for each table  Flight Simulator downloaded on each computer  Audience Response Clickers for every participant  Written Helicopter Emergency Medical Service mishap case study

Technology  Computers will have Flight Simulator downloaded with the flight path of the mishap aircraft  Conference will begin with a tribute to helicopter EMS personnel  Audience Response Clickers will be used throughout the presentation

Pedagogy - Methods  Lecture will be the primary means of information  Class will be divided into ten tables of six participants  Video will begin the course while materials are being passed out  Presentation will stop at various points to ask the audience questions in which they will respond via Audience Response Clickers  End of presentation will include case study  Each table will answer one question that pertains to the personal discipline factors that may have been present at that point of the flight

Pedagogy – Student Outcomes  Students will have ten minutes to discuss the case study question assigned  Students will tell the class what part of the flight the aircraft was located then share their answer with the rest of the class beginning a class discussion  Students will answer questions such as “Why should you care about something that has never caused you to compromise a mission or have an accident” with clickers

Pedagogy - Assessment  Learners will be given a written test in which they must score an 80% or greater to receive a certificate of completion to present to their employer

Implementation  Class will be divided into ten tables of six participants. A video will begin the course while materials such as Audience Response Clickers are being passed out.  The presentation will stop at various points to ask the audience questions in which they will respond via the clickers so I can go over any information that may not have been understood by some of the class. The end of the presentation will have a case study analysis of an aircraft, specifically a helicopter EMS mishap. Each table will answer one question that pertains to the personal discipline factors that may have been present during the flight

Your Evaluation of the Lesson  There are essentially two types of evaluations I can reflect upon. The first is with the use of the clickers and the percentages of right and wrong answers. This will tell me if the audience is understanding the lecture.  The second is the end of course quiz. Eighty percent is essential for passing the course in order to receive a certificate. The percentage of passing is expected to be 100%. Any less then I will need to reflect back on the questions missed and review my materials.

In Closing  “The greatest battles are waged within.”  The challenge of human error will never be remedied by any traditional safety program. Personal error must be slowly untangled – in a private battle within each individual. This is true because in high achievers, human error and personal weakness is secret and sacred ground.
