3 Ageism The belief that one age category is by nature superior to another category. This could apply to any group. Examples? Give me some adjectives for the old. Give me some adjectives the old may give the young. What agent of society is the biggest reinforcer of ageism towards the elderly?

4 Ageism Would an 80 year old ever appear in a Cover Girl ad? What do they advertise instead? Is aging positive or negative? Your opinion.

5 The aging world More than 700,000,000 people worldwide over the age of 60. By 2050 it will be 2,000,000,000. Oldest continent? Youngest continent? By 2050, in Europe, over 60 will outnumber under 15 by 3 to 1 What about America? By 2050 it will be 1 in 5 Known as the “graying of America”

6 Graying of America – Why? Advances in health care Change in birthrates What happened between 1946 and the early 1960’s? Baby Boom Generation By 2030 All boomers will have reached at least age 65. Around 70 million strong.

7 Consequences? Politics AARP,NCSS, Gray Panthers Social Security – what is going to happen when you get lower birth rate + millions of people over 65 + Longer lives? Dependency Ratio - # of workers for each person receiving SS benifits. In 1960 it was 5:1 In 2030 it will be 2:1 Currently 5.8 million people over 85 Medicare and Medicaid

8 Age Inequality Who are more likely to be poor? AA – 22% Hispanics – 19% Whites – 8%

9 Disabilities 53 million disabled Americans. What does it mean to be disabled? Do we discriminate the disabled? What is the #1 way? Employment Education for All handicapped children Act of 1975

10 ADA ADA of 1990 addresses employment, public services, accommodations, and telecommunications Employment – hiring, promotion, and pay Companies must provide aid if necessary. Unless? Public Services and Access – Huge Deal! Theater Story TRS – telecommunication relay service (regular plus text telephones) Rates must be the same.
