Divided the empire into provinces ruled by governors
Maurya was afraid of being assassinated
Secret police, food was tested on site, never slept two nights in a row in the same bed in his house
Asoka (grandson) – used Buddhism to guide his rule
Set up hospitals for people and animals
Set up trees along the roads for rest

3. Three New Empires The Kushan Empire
Prospered from trade that passed between the Mediterranean countries and the other countries bordering the Pacific Ocean
Silk Road
Trade between the Roman Empire and China
China’s most valuable product was silk
Road was about 4,000 miles
Luxury goods were transported on this route because camel caravans were difficult, dangerous and expensive

4. Three New Empires The Empire of the Guptas
New age of Indian civilization
Actively engaged in trade with China, Southeast Asia, and the Mediterranean
Traded cloth, salt, and iron
Gupta rulers managed trade and they earned large profits
Lived in luxury, awakening to the sound of music
Empire did not last because of nomadic Huns that reduced the power of the empire

Literature
Mahabharata – describes a war between cousins for control of the kingdom
Most Indian works are tied with morals and religious lessons
Architecture
Pillar – built to mark important sites of Buddha’s life
Stupa – built in the form of burial mounds
Rock Chamber – developed to proved a series of rooms to house monks

6. Indian Accomplishments
Science and Mathematics
Charted the movements of the stars and recognized that the earth rotated on an axis around the sun
Used Algebra
Introduced the concept of zero and used a symbol for it
