HERNE BAY HIGH SCHOOL & SPORTS COLLEGE BTEC First in Sport & Outdoor Education UNIT 2: Health, Safety & Injury in Sport Assignment 3 Student Name: P3 “Describe four different types of injuries associated with sports participation and their underlying causes” P4 “Describe types and signs of illnesses related to sports participation” M3 “Explain why certain injuries and illnesses are associated with sports participation” Learning Outcomes: To understand common sporting injuries and illness and their possible causes Further information can be found in the BTEC textbook “BTEC First Sport ”. 2 A dislocation of the shoulder
Starter Match the correct definition with the correct type of injury: injury to the brain or spinal cord due to jarring from a blow, fall, or the like fragments lacerate soft tissue and protrude through an open wound in the skin. Also called compound fracture an uncomplicated fracture in which the broken bones do not pierce the skin. Also called a simple fracture Caused by a direct force, or by placing joints in an abnormal position Open fracture A dislocation of the shoulder Closed fracture Concussion

3 Activity (1) Watch the following video and highlight whether the injury the sports performer receives is: A broken bone A dislocation of the shoulder Concussion Do you know what the signs and symptoms are for this type of injury? Numbness Severe pain Swelling No movement in injured limb Bruising

4 Activity (2) Watch the following video and highlight whether the injury the sports performer receives is: A broken bone A dislocation of the shoulder Concussion Do you know what the signs and symptoms are for this type of injury? Temporary loss of consciousness Memory loss Loss of balance Change in breathing rate Disturbed vision

5 Activity Open Fracture Symptoms of both Closed Fracture
Watch the following video which highlights numerous broken bones (in addition to other injuries). Whilst watching the video you must think about which of the following signs and symptoms are for an open fracture and which are for a closed fracture. Open Fracture Symptoms of both Closed Fracture Bone breaking through skin Redness Bleeding Redness Discolouration Swelling Bruising Pain

6 Task 1: a) You must highlight a type of injury associated with sports participation and give a description of the type of injury (further reading is available in the BTEC text book, pages 39 – 57): Dislocations Usually occur at joints. They can be caused by direct force, or by placing joints in an abnormal position. A common site of dislocation is the shoulder joint, where the upper arm bone comes away from its socket. Example

7 Example Dislocations Types of injury: Causes and risk factors
Task 1(a): a) You must describe the causes, signs and symptoms, how to minimise the risk and how to treat your highlighted injury (further reading is available in the BTEC text book, pages 39 – 57): Types of injury: Dislocations Causes and risk factors Signs and symptoms Minimising risk of injury Treatment Dislocations are commonly caused by falling onto an outstretched arm or by a blow, for example to the shoulder. They are most common in: Contact sports, although they can happen in kayaking when attempting a high brace support Severe pain No movement Visible bone deformity Swelling Bruising Numbness Adequate warm-up Protective equipment Wear strapping First aid: Call for a trained person if one is present, or phone 999 Ensure casualty is kept warm to prevent shock Do not attempt to reposition the dislocated bone; only a trained person should do this Example

8 Task 1(b): a) In the space provided you must highlight your FIRST injury associated with sports participation and give a description of the type of injury (Please refer to the example on task 1 for guidance. Further reading is available in the BTEC text book, pages 39 – 57):

9 Types of injury: Causes and risk factors Signs and symptoms
Task 1(c): a) You must describe the causes, signs and symptoms, how to minimise the risk and how to treat your FIRST highlighted injury (Please refer to the example on task 1a for guidance. Further reading is available in the BTEC text book, pages 39 – 57): Types of injury: Causes and risk factors Signs and symptoms Minimising risk of injury Treatment

10 Activity As a class if you believe you know of any illnesses which could happen whilst out walking on a cold mountain walk then place your hand into the air and share your knowledge with the class 

11 Task 2: a) You must highlight a type of illness associated with sports participation and give a description of the illness (further reading is available in the BTEC text book, pages 39 – 62): Hypothermia Hypothermia can be defined as a dramatic fall in body temperature to below 35 degrees Celsius. Example

12 Example Hypothermia Types of illness: Causes and risk factors
Task 2(a): a) You must describe the causes, signs and symptoms, how to minimise the risk and how to treat your highlighted illness: Types of illness: Hypothermia Causes and risk factors Signs and symptoms Minimising risk of injury Treatment Hypothermia can be caused when an athlete trains in extreme cold conditions for a prolonged period of time. This type of illness could easily happen to people who become trapped in a blizzard when attempting to climb a mountain Shivering Cramps Low blood pressure Low pulse and breathing rate Confusion Disorientation Cold, pale, dry skin Be equipped for all kinds of weather Wear extra, thin layers of clothing Wear a waterproof and windproof outer layer of clothing Wear a hat and gloves Eat extra energy foods and warm drinks First aid: Cover person with foil blanket Replace any wet clothing with warm dry clothing If person is fit and healthy, bathe them in a warm bath to increase body temperature Example

13 Task 2(b): a) In the space provided you must highlight your FIRST illness which is related to sports participation and give a description of the type of illness (Please refer to the example on task 2 for guidance. Further reading is available in the BTEC text book, pages 58 – 62):

14 Types of illness: Causes and risk factors Signs and symptoms
Task 2(c): a) You must describe the causes, signs and symptoms, how to minimise the risk and how to treat your FIRST highlighted illness (Please refer to the example on task 2(a) for guidance. Further reading is available in the BTEC text book, pages 58 – 62): Types of illness: Causes and risk factors Signs and symptoms Minimising risk of injury Treatment

15 Task 2(d): a) In the space provided you must highlight your SECOND illness which is related to sports participation and give a description of the type of illness (Please refer to the example on task 2 for guidance. Further reading is available in the BTEC text book, pages 58 – 62):

16 Types of illness: Causes and risk factors Signs and symptoms
Task 2(e): a) You must describe the causes, signs and symptoms, how to minimise the risk and how to treat your SECOND highlighted illness (Please refer to the example on task 2(a) for guidance. Further reading is available in the BTEC text book, pages 58 – 62): Types of illness: Causes and risk factors Signs and symptoms Minimising risk of injury Treatment
