17 STUDENT ENGAGEMENT PROJECT Faculty Project on Student Persistence through Classroom Engagement (partial description; some items not listed below) Instructors will learn the names of students as quickly as possible and create community in the classroom by having students learn one another’s name Instructors will schedule a 15-minute conference with each student during the first three weeks of the semester. (We strongly suggest that you offer student some kind of credit for attending these conferences.) Instructors will present requirements clearly and set high academic standards. However, instructors will have no policies that can doom students to failure for a few missteps. Instructors will make an appropriate assignment as early as possible in order to give students early feedback. 17
