7th Grade ELA with Mrs. Lee Welcome to Back to School Night!

● This is my 21st year of teaching. ● All my experience is in middle school. ● I taught in Long Beach Unified for two years before coming to La Habra. ● I have taught at Imperial Middle School, worked for the district as an academic coach, and now I teach here at Washington Middle School. ● I have a BA in English, MS in Reading Science, and my administrative credential. Classroom Expectations ●Be ready to learn - come prepared to class with required book(s), pen, pencil, and other materials. ●Bring an independent reading book to class daily. ●Give respect at all times and you will receive respect at all times. ELA

Homework Policy Student Responsibilities: ●Write your homework assignments in your student agenda. ●Write down all due dates for projects in your agenda. ●Contact your study buddy* when you are absent to find out what you missed and need to make-up. ○ ask if there was homework ○ copy any missed notes ○ come to Mrs. Lee’s Homework Club on Thursdays to ask questions or review class work the week of your absence.

Homework Policy ●Assignments and projects will be marked down 10%- 50% unless it is an excused absence. ●After three days, you can only earn 50% credit on assignments and projects. ●All missed quizzes and tests must be made up during Mrs. Lee’s Homework Club. ●It is the responsibility of the student to remember to make-up missed quizzes and tests.

Absences ●If you are absent on the day homework or a project is due, you are expected to turn it in the day you return. ●If you are absent on the day of a quiz or test, you are expected to make it up and the very next available homework club. ●If you need help with work you missed you must attend my homework club.

Grades Student grades are based on total points earned divided by total points possible. Students will be assessed through: ●class work ●class discussions ●tests ●essays ●projects ●homework

Making the Grade Making the Grade (MTG) Reports will be passed out periodically. ●Save all your graded work until you see your MTG or after you have checked your grades online (parent portal). ●If I have made a mistake, you must show “proof”.

Literature 7 ● All work related to literature ● Vocabulary related to literature ● Reading logs/Book reviews (Biblionasium) ● Reading comprehension tests/quizzes

Technology This year we will be using iPADS in our classroom. Students are expected to display responsible and respectable behavior in using technology. This year we will be using the following programs in addition to many others…. ●Biblionasium - in place of reading logs and book reports ●Kidblog - students will be creating their own blog!

What is BiblioNasium? ●fun, reading-focused social network for kids ages 6-13 ●Kids can log their reading, complete reading challenges and earn rewards within a safe social network built especially for them. Is it safe? ●The Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) is a piece of legislation passed on April 21, 2000 to help keep children safe on the Internet. Global Read Aloud Beginning October 6, we will participate in the Global Read Aloud. ●We will connect with another classroom somewhere in another state or country through email or our class blogs. ●One For the Murphy’s by Lyndy Mullaly Hunt

Penpals We will be exchanging letters with a 7th grade class in Rome, Italy. The purpose of the exchange will be to learn more about each country’s culture while practicing our writing skills.

Tips for supporting your child ● Check backpacks ● Look through their student agenda ● Look through binder and spirals ● Check Parent Portal on a regular basis
