4 Sustainable Technologies People often say they are using disruptive technologies when they use technologies to do things differently. These are sustainable technologies. 7 You, your computer and the Net Piloted by the OU in 1999 and launched in 2000 with over 10,000 students. The largest online course at that time. “Excellent communication skills are required to prevent feelings of isolation and being ignored.” “A tutor on-line needs more perception on picking up problems or potential problems, their being no body language and behaviour to observe.” “I must go back and read all the back dated e-mails just to get a gist of what people have been saying. Will get back to you once I have done that.” In the pilot year of T171 the first page asked students to ‘click on the link below’. After struggling with this for a period of time the student called his tutor to say that he could not find a link on that page. When he was told it was the underlined words in blue – he said that he felt ‘stupid’ because he was looking for an image of a link. That was 13 years ago. What has changed?

8 Was this course disruptive? Absolutely Feedback from many tutors said it was too time consuming, students liked to meet their tutor in person, come together to meet each other over a cup of tea. They thought it would never “take off”.

10 Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) Over 6.7 million are online learners Sloan report – January 2013 Seemed to be many drop outs –“ While completion rates on nearly all moocs are low – somewhere below 10% – this doesn't matter, says Jeff Haywood, professor of education and technology. Some 12% of students completed Edinburgh's first batch of moocs. Many sign up to "window shop" or dip in and out, which is no bad thing, he says. Edinburgh's students came mostly from the US and UK and those who responded to the survey said the courses met or exceeded expectations” The Guardian 18 June 2013
