Physical Properties: Extensive vs Intensive Physical Properties Check homework for completion and turn in Safety Contracts Review homework Notes: Extensive vs Intensive Physical Properties Lab: Density – Does Size Matter? Homework: – Complete lab packet “Density: Does Size Matter?”

1. State the formula for density in words and mathematical symbols. Density is the amount of mass in a certain amount of space. Density = Mass / Volume

2. A rock has a mass of 210 grams and occupies a volume of 70 cm 3. What is its density? Density = mass / volume Density = 210 g / 70 cm 3 Density = 3 g/cm 3

3. An unknown solid occupies a volume of 5 cm3and has a mass of 40 grams. Find its density. Density = mass / volume Density = 40 g / 5 cm 3 Density = 8 g/cm 3

4. Define the following vocabulary words: Mass and Volume Mass: an object’s resistance to change in motion. Volume: the amount of space an object takes up.

5. A rectangular solid of unknown density is 5 meters long, 2 meters high and 4 meters wide. The mass of this solid is 300 grams. Given this information for this homogeneous (alike throughout) material, calculate its density. Volume = length x width x height = 5 m x 2m x 4m = 40 m 3 Density = mass / volume = 300 g / 40m = 7.5 g/m 3

6. A rock occupies a volume of 20 cm 3 and has a mass of 54 grams. Find the density of this rock. Density = mass / volume Density = 54 g / 20 cm 3 Density = 2.7 g /cm 3

7. A cube made of an unknown material has a height of 9 cm. The mass of this cube is 3,645 grams. Calculate the density of this cube given this information. Hint: a cube has 6 equal sides Volume = length x width x height = 9 cm x 9cm x 9cm = 729 cm 3 Density = mass / volume = 3,645 g/ 729 cm 3 = 5 g / cm 3

Review: Physical Properties of Matter Physical Property: A measurable attribute of matter. Composition of matter does not change. – Examples?

Notes: Extensive Physical Properties – Properties that change if the quantity of the substance changes. Example:

Intensive Physical Properties: Properties that do not change if the quantity of the substance changes. Example:

Lab: Will the density of a substance change if we change its size? (Is it an EXTENSIVE OR INTENSIVE property?)

If all of these objects are made of pure gold what is the density of each object?

All of these objects are made of lead. What is the density of each?

All of these objects are made of copper. What is the density of each?

Mass: Extensive or Intensive? Explain.

Volume: Extensive or Intensive? Explain.

Density: Intensive or Extensive? Explain?

Homework: Complete the lab packet. Safety Contract- – For late credit

Review: What is the density of each substance shown. Every cube has a volume of 1 cm 3. Which substance is the most dense? What does that mean? Would the density change if we changed the size….let’s find out.

ACTUAL DENSITIES
