3 Born and Raised Born in 1938 in Newark, New Jersey Raised in Newark, New Jersey

4 Tice’s Early Years Began photographing at 14 with the Carteret Camera Club Studied photography at the Newark Vocational and Technical School Age 16 he left high school to work as a darkroom assistant for a Newark portrait studio Enlisted in the Navy at age 17

5 Image that sparked Tice’s Career 1959 a photo Tice published of an explosion aboard the USS Wasp was purchased by Edward Steichen – This allowed Tice to shift focus from professional photography to personal work

6 1960s Tice worked as a portrait photographer Established the Witkin Gallery Tice shifted from smaller camera formats to larger camera formats – Allowed him to print more detailed photographs

7 1970s Tice began to explore his home state The photographs he captured began the Urban Landscape series – He continued working on this series until 2000

8 Social Circles Mainly associated with photographers – Carteret Camera Club Printed portfolios for Edwards Weston and Frederick H. Evans Taught at Maine Photographic Workshops

19 Principles of Design The amount of movement in Tice’s photos varies Repetition and pattern are often shown in the buildings and objects in the background and foreground in Tice’s photos Different uses of light and different subjects show uniqueness in Tice’s photos

20 Lighting Tice varies the time of his photos. He often utilizes the darkness of night Artificial light is used in night time photos to bring emphasis to the subjects Natural light is present in Tice’s portraits and landscapes. In these cases the main sources of light comes from above the subject
