Tara Schmidt Safety Officer 2015

 The safety of our players, coaches, staff and spectators are at the forefront of our concern  The league has developed a safety plan called the “ASAP Plan”, which details all safety related topics. This plan is submitted each year for approval to Little League International (LLI) and posted on the league website.

 All managers and coaches are must review the ASAP plan.  The document contains in detail: ◦ Safety Code ◦ Treating Injuries ◦ Training Requirements ◦ Code of Conduct ◦ Lightning safety procedures ◦ Accident reporting ◦ Concession stand procedures

 Inspect playing site before play  Play close attention to weather conditions ◦ See ASAP plan for lightning facts and safety procedures  Teach players the basics of good nutrition and hydration  Conduct proper athletic conditioning (stretching, warm ups)  Avoid over use  Consistent and proper use of protective equipment  Close supervision by coaches  Compliance with WBLL rules, especially safety code of conduct

Step #1 = Stop Play Step #2 = Check breathing, pulse, and alertness. Step #3 = Access severity of Injury Step #4 = Give first aid Step #5 = Turn over care (professional/family) Step #6 = Report accident Step #7 = Require medical release to return to play

 If someone on the field is injured (player, coach, umpire, spectator) stop play immediately.  This will protect the injured from further injury and allow prompt and focused attention to the injury.  Have someone locate the parent/guardian

 Check breathing, pulse and alertness of injured party. If any of these are questionable: ◦ Send someone to call 911. Cell phone is available in concession stand. It is advisable for at least one coach to have working cell phone, especially for practices. ◦ Send someone to road to direct emergency personnel to injured. ◦ Have someone review Medical Release form for any important information/medical conditions. All head coaches must have copies of Medical Release forms with them at all team events.

 Evaluate Injury- Determine if player can be moved off field ◦ Active Motion  Player is able to move the part, themselves ◦ Active Assistive Motion  Player able to move the part with some help, watch for warning signs (it hurts to move), do not make injury worse ◦ Passive Motion  Player cannot move part by themselves, someone else can move it. Again be careful not to make injury worse ◦ Disability  Most Severe  Player cannot use the injured part

 Assess swelling ◦ Swelling is a sign of a more severe injury, will start immediately after injury ◦ Caused by bleeding under the skin ◦ If the part does not look like it did before the injury, something is wrong, seek medical help.

 Bruises  Muscle pulls or strains  Overuse Injuries  Sprains ◦ Apply Ice ◦ Loosely wrap with cloth bandage, if area allows ◦ Elevate ◦ Rest injured part ◦ Seek medical advice, if necessary

 Fractures ◦ If you suspect a fracture, seek emergency medical assistance.  Calm the person  Immobilize injury – cardboard is available  Apply ice ◦ Do not:  Attempt to straighten the broken bone  Move without support to broken bone, best not to move  Move joints above or below fracture  Give liquids or food (may need surgery)

 Facial/Eye/Teeth Injuries ◦ Be certain person can hear, see or maintain balance ◦ If any doubt, seek emergency medical assistance.  Calm the person  Apply pressure to any wound, unless eye or you feel a loose bone  Apply ice  Save any extracted teeth, do not touch root. Keep tooth moist. ◦ Do not:  Remove batting helmet  Give liquids or food (may need surgery)

 Concussion ◦ Seek emergency medical assistance if any LOC, severe vomiting, confusion/agitation, seizure. ◦ Rest the person ◦ Apply Ice ◦ Advise family to monitor person for 24 hours ◦ Must be seen by physician and cleared to return to play, per WBLL policy

 Insect Bites and Stings ◦ Review medical information and be aware of any player with allergies to insect bites ◦ If player has difficulty breathing/nausea/increased heart rate/dizziness or LOC, seek emergency medical assistance. ◦ If only minor reaction to bite:  Remove stinger with fingernail or tweezers  Apply Ice  Elevate area  Medication to relieve pain is available in the concession stand

 Heat Illness ◦ Move person to cool place ◦ Loosen clothing ◦ Drink fluids (cool water) ◦ Put cool towels on back of neck, under arm pits or groin area ◦ If person is not sweating/LOC/seizure or other complications, seek emergency medical assistance.

 Turn over care ◦ Parents  Urge parents to see a doctor if emergency care is not required ◦ Emergency medical assistance/ambulance  Go with player if parents are not available  Turn over team to assistant coach

 Report Accident ◦ Complete incident report form, found on little league website. Place in safety office mailbox at diamonds or email to Tara Schmidt. ◦ Contact Safety Officer, Tara Schmidt or league president, David Homuth within 48 hours of incident. Contact information is on WBLL website and in ASAP Plan. ◦ Safety Officer will follow-up with family within 48 hours. ◦ Near misses can also be reported, use the same form.

 Require medical release ◦ Players are required to have medical clearance to return to play, if injury was a concussion. Medical clearance is highly recommended for all other injuries.

 All coaches must review the ASAP plan on- line  Take steps to prevent injury  Report any accidents within 24 hours
