8 RYG 1: Knowledge of Functionalist Views of Education This essay is about functionalist views of education. Explain the following views a)Durkheim: Social solidarity and specialist skills allocation b)Parsons: Education as a Bridge and meritocracy c)Davis and Moore: Selection and Role allocation d)Blau and Duncan: Human Capital and meritocracy RYG 2: Evaluation: Comparing two theories a)Read the model paragraphs on the A4 sheet that compare two theories – this is a really good example of how to do evaluation ‘in conversation’. b) Re-read your essay and plan how you could organise your essay to do this. c) Adapt two of your paragraphs to connect them together Remember : Janus faced sentences – your 1 st sentence should look back at the previous paragraph and forward to this one RYG 3: Compare – You need to include the alternative view You have included functionalist views in your essay. The question however asks you to ‘assess’ this means you must include other views eg Marxist, Feminist, New Right a)Explain a Marxists view of education b)Give reason why this is different to Functionalists If time do a 2 nd view RYG 4: Conclusion You have read an example of an evaluative conclusion a) Read the model evaluation paragraph on the sheet b) What do you think are the strengths of the functionalist view? c) What do you think are the weaknesses of the functionalist view of education? d) Use the above to reach a judgment about the contribution of functionalist to our understanding of the role of education RYG 5: Examples of education Sociology is the study of real lived society, you need to show you know real things that happen in education a)Give an example of something in schools that creates social solidarity b)Give an example of how schools act as a bridge between school and work c)Give an example of a negative part of the UK education system d)Re-read your essay and add examples in at least three places RYG 6: Concepts Using the list of concepts on the board take one at a time and define it. Choose 5 words and incorporate them into your essay RYG 7: Explain terms and ideas using PEEL You have read some model paragraphs Bullet point the key ideas within your essay. Then pick one of the ideas which you did not develop and turn it into a PEEL paragraph …………argue…… because……. For example….. This shows……….. If you have time repeat for a 2 nd paragraph
