Causatives -Means to “cause something to happen” or “make something happen” Use: Get someone to do something and have someone do something mean “to make, ask, or persuade someone to do something.” Context usually makes it clear whether the person is compelled(forced/made) or persuaded / asked. I get my kids to help me with the chores. I get my brother to fix the car.

Get and Have Get + person + to + verb I get / got my sister to clean her room Have + person + verb I have / had my mother pick me up from the bus stop. Get / Have + object + Past Participle. I get / have my hair cut professionally. We’re having a new house built.

Causatives While the book is teaching that there is no real difference between get and have … Get(s) / got = persuaded / forced Have / Had / has = ask and they did the action. Make(s) / made = forced

You must plan a party. Or road trip. Anything that requires a great deal of preparation and errands. They must compile a list of things they must get done and who will do it for them. It should look like this: I got a caterer to provide the food and drinks My wife got The Rolling Stones to play music. I had a priest conduct the ceremony. I had a tailor make our suits. I got my father-in-law to pay for the lot!

Lesson B. p68. 1. Need + passive infinitive. Need to be done. The toilet needs to be fixed. 2. Need + verb + ing. Need doing. The toilet needs fixing. Both structures mean that something should be done.

Q. Have you ever broken something in your house or at someone else’s? I clogged the toilet once at a friends house. And I had to tell her mother that the toilet needed fixing. I was so embarrassed!

The causative means that someone other than ourselves does something for us. Therefore, we usually make an arrangement with a professional to do to it. Maybe it’s difficult, impossible or we simply don’t want to do it. a) She’s having her house painted. b) We’ve had the carpets cleaned. c) They’ll be having their dinner served at half past eight. d) We’ve been having our garden remodelled. Some people pay others to do jobs they don’t want to do … Such as:- cut the lawn, ironing, painting, dog walking, shovel snow, clean the house, tutoring. 1A. What do you do yourself?
