3 Context Year 3 Degree Module – entitled “Comparing Healthcare Systems” Culminates in a 4 week elective identified & organised by the student Assessed via 15 minute individual presentation to colleagues & formal report

4 Learning Outcomes Critically reflect on the impact that a country’s welfare model has upon its health care provision Analyse the political, economic and social dimensions of different health care systems Examine and evaluate how demographic and epidemiology studies influence health care provision Describe and critically evaluate how communities develop micro-health systems to meet local cultural needs Critically reflect on multicultural dimensions of health care provision

5 Skills Finding a placement – research Fundraising – all electives are self-funded! Contacting potential placement providers (telephone, e-mail, formal letters, etc.) Collating required documents, development of CV Organisational skills - maintaining a timeline of action Organising all transport & accommodation Keeping a journal, recording of key events, photos, people met etc. Presentation skills (written & verbal)

7 Case Study 1 – Vicky S03 Elective – Australia Worked at the Aboriginal Medical Service in Western Sydney alongside Community & District Nurses Spent much of her placement travelling to outlying areas – with little or no equipment – developed “great assessment skills and insights into the health beliefs of indigenous people” Currently works in ITU

8 Case Study 2 – Rebecca S04 Elective - Northwest Emergency Recompression Unit (Wirral) The unit is one of only 8 Cox Category One hyperbaric facilities on the UK mainland After graduation worked in A&E at the Royal Liverpool Infirmary Within a year she had returned to the Recompression Unit as Nurse Manager

9 Case Study 3 – Emma S05 Elective – Hong Kong, Princess Margaret Hospital Worked in High Dependency areas (Intensive Care & HDU) Offered a full-time permanent post at Manchester Royal Infirmary after graduation Currently a Senior Staff Nurse in ITU at MRI

10 Case Study 4 – Helen S06 Elective - “Brook” in Manchester providing sexual health advice & contraception to under 25’s. Following graduation was seconded by Brook to undertake her post graduate sexual health qualification at MMU Currently Nurse Manager of the Brook Centre in Salford

11 Case Study 5 – Cheryl S06 Elective - in Dar Es Salaam in Tanzania in May 2009 Cheryl and 2 other students went to the Mnazi Mmoja Hosptial to work in the Accident and Emergency department as well as the HIV clinic and Female surgical wards Cheryl worked in CCU following graduation and was recently appointed to the new “Heart Centre” at CIC as a Staff Nurse

12 Case Study 6 – Joanna S08 Elective - at Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle in ITU Commenced full time, permanent employment in their ITU in October 2011 “Undertaking my elective at the RVI changed my life!”

13 Case Study 7 – Makala S08 Elective – ITU in Birmingham Hospital Applied to Royal Navy for Trauma Nursing Corps Shortlisted out of over 100 applicants Accepted to Royal Navy Trauma Nursing Corps in November 2011 and recently commenced her training at Birmingham City Hospital Trauma Unit
