1 Impact of Washington To what extent did the various political ideologies of Hamilton and Jefferson create further tensions within foreign policy? Do Now: the rise of political parties HW- number 2 coming soon.

2 The First Political Parties: By 1793, the Federalists had split over Hamilton’s financial plans for the nation; - Democratic Republicans (Jefferson) - Federalists (Hamilton) * Jefferson saw the success of the country in the hands of the Yeoman Farmer; whose work could support a nation – (unlike the wage labor of the north)

4 Why did Support for the French during their revolution end? Spirit of ‘76 Support for the French Revolution was divided.. –Jacobins (social egalitarian) vs. the Christians –When the Revolution turned radical, the support slipped away

5 Washington’s Neutrality In 1793, Washington issued the Neutrality Proclamation, proclaiming the U.S.’s official neutrality and warning Americans to stay out of the issue and be impartial.

7 What about Britain… The Issue… The British government retained the frontier posts on the U.S. soil; all in defiance of the peace treaty of 1783. Politics… The JDR wanted to fight the British to remove them from North America; The federalists opposed this action because Hamilton saw that economic success depended on trade with England.

8 How did the Washington respond to the British Treat in North America? Washington sent John Jay to London in 1794 to negotiate. Britain agreed to evacuate the posts; pay for damages to American ships; America would continue to pay debts to British merchants JDR Response to Treaty was unfavorable

9 How did the Jay’s treaty influence other European countries? The Fear of and Anglo- American alliance forced Spain to strike a deal with the U.S. Pinckney’s Treaty of 1795, granted the Americans free navigation of the Mississippi River and the large disputed territory north of Florida
