Welcome to Room 30! Mr. Rhee 4 th Grade

4 th Grade – Camino Grove 4th Grade Teacher Team: Mrs. Helen Conroy Mr. Scott Lopez Mr. Tim Rhee Ms. Lori Rozelle Camino Grove Website: http://www.ausd.k12.ca.us/camino/ http://www.ausd.k12.ca.us/camino/

About Mr. Rhee This is my 8 th year teaching at Camino Grove. I have always taught 4 th grade or a 4/5 combo class. I finished my Masters of Arts in Teaching in 2006. I love to learn, too! Schools attended: Cal State LA, UCSD, Arcadia High, Dana, Camino Grove

About Mr. Rhee, continued Thinking Maps will be used all year to organize our thinking! This is a basic circle map that defines who I am or what I enjoy.

As a professional learning team, we have your child’s best interest at heart and make it our purpose every day to encourage, motivate, and inspire children to grow both academically and socially. Our Team Philosophy Our goal is to make sure that every child who enters our classroom, leaves at the end of the year standing taller, more confident, and leaves knowing they were cared for and that they matter!

Our Team Strategy We provide engaging and differentiated instruction to learners of all levels. We strive to make learning relevant, providing many learning opportunities to solve real world problems. At our collaboration meetings, which occur every Wednesday afternoon (why we have early dismissal on Wednesdays), we discuss student work and teaching strategies that have brought student success.

How is 4 th grade different? Larger class size - 32:1 student to teacher More emphasis on being independent learners, to prepare students for upper grades More responsibility Continued focus on learning problem solving skills Improved organizational skills Proficiency in typing skills Increased research skills using the internet and books as resources It is very important for students to have multiplication facts memorized within the first trimester as math skills become more complex

4 th Grade Highlights 4 th graders get to look forward to many very special events and learning units this year:  Robotics  Rocks/Minerals – Electricity/Magnets – Life Science  Social Studies is all about the history of CA  Track Meet – May  California Day – June Go Roadrunners!  New Math Curriculum this year!

Parent Communication  Classroom Website: http://teachers.ausd.net/classlink/ http://teachers.ausd.net/classlink/  Friday Folders will have important school notices, graded class work, a reading log that must be signed weekly, and a record of your child’s progress in life skills.  My e-mail address is trhee@ausd.net and is the most efficient way to communicate.trhee@ausd.net  3 report cards, 2 student led conferences, and Open House in the spring. Please sign up today for Fall Student Led Conferences. This will be a valuable time when students showcase their hard work and we look at student progress in 4 th grade.

Parent Volunteers We welcome parents to visit our classrooms and sign up for volunteer opportunities. Please sign up to be a classroom parent volunteer and complete the school office volunteer form. TB Test Required. Any time a parent is on campus to volunteer in the classroom, or attend a field trip, classroom party, or other special event, the school office is required to have TB test results on file. We thank you in advance for being an important part of our teacher-child-parent partnership! If you are able to help with purchasing supplies from the Giving Tree, we thank you too!

Classroom Management Class rules and expectations are set with students and reflect a classroom that is learning. Classroom jobs teach responsibility and ownership. Mr. Rhee dollars are awarded to students every Monday for what I expect to be a great week of learning. The goal for students is to maintain the highest possible balance through each week (each week starts over with $20) and throughout the whole trimester. Performance in life skills can be tracked as the dollar balance is recorded in the Friday Folders. Positive reinforcement motivates students to make the wise choices.

4 th Grade Homework Policy Daily homework includes 40 minutes of practicing concepts we have already learned in class. In addition, we require at least 20 minutes of self-selected reading which is very important to ensure your child’s continued growth in vocabulary, comprehension skills, and writing skills. Students will be required to complete a reading log, Mondays through Thursdays, which is to be turned in every Friday, with a parent signature. Arcadia Library Arcadia Library offers “Homework Help” on their website for grades 4 -12. Be sure to have your child apply for their very own library card! It’s easy!

Curriculum Highlights Fourth grade is an exciting time with many new things to learn. Following are some of the areas we’ll be discovering together in 4 th grade …

4 th Grade Writing Standards Formal Writing Assessments: 3 district writing assessments – October, February, May CA State Writing Test: CA Star Testing in March. Writing Focus for 4 th Grade The Writing Process 6 Traits of Writing 4 Writing Genres: Personal Narrative, Summary, Response to Literature, Narrative Personal narratives are snapshots of your life!

MY Access Online Writing MY Access School Edition is an instructional writing and tutoring computer program designed for use in schools. This award winning computer writing program provides unmatched accuracy in scoring writing assignments and unlimited opportunities for students to write, revise, and learn. Sometimes, writing on MY Access will be assigned over the period of 1-2 weeks in which having access to a computer at home would be helpful, but is not required. Students will have time to work on assignments in school. Often students get so excited watching their scores climb that they are motivated to work on assignments at home! Online writing program at www.myaccess.comwww.myaccess.com

Roadrunner Reading Club Each trimester, all 4 th grade students will receive a “game day” reward for reaching their reading goals. Students are expected to read and pass at least 5 books, with 10 points, from the online Accelerated Reading Program for the 1 st trimester. For each book read, students receive points based on the book’s reading level. Each trimester reading goals will be increased slightly to encourage student reading. We encourage students to read at their own personal reading level – books from all genres including fiction, fantasy, fables, fairy tales, science fiction, adventure, mystery, and non-fiction. Home reading is key!

Step Through Reading Groups will be flexible, allowing students to flow from one group to the next as they attain specific skills, or find they need further assistance in reinforcing particular competencies. Groups will be taught by the four 4 th grade teachers and Camino Grove’s reading intervention specialist, Mrs. Danae Popovich. Reading will be set up into skills-based reading groups, focusing on skills in comprehension, fluency, asking meaningful questions, prediction/inference, summarizing and more.

Scholastic Book Reading Club To keep students in books all year, I pass out Scholastic Book reading club order forms on a monthly basis. Scholastic has fantastic prices and Room 30 gains bonus points for each book that is purchased which can be redeemed to purchase new books for the classroom library. Read … read … read … and read some more! And then some more! Payment instructions: Please pay with a check made payable to: Scholastic. No need to write separate checks for each order form! Just add up all order form totals for a grand total amount. Thank you.
