Learning Intentions Review the factors affecting the development of Public Health in the 19 th Century. Outline the history of the Liberal Reforms 1906 – 1930.

Government At the beginning Government was slowing down progress…How? 1867 New voters – MPs had to listen! Weakening of Laissez Faire. 1870 Every local authority had to set up schools – Education was better. 1874 Public Health Act

Individuals Edwin Chadwick – Recommendations to clean up houses, drain the streets and appoint a medical officer to prevent disease. John Snow – Statistical analysis link between dirty water and cholera. Louis Pasteur – Link between germs and disease.

Science and Technology Developments in science – John Snow statistical approach and study of Epidemiology. – Louis Pasteur germ theory proven. – Joseph Lister antiseptic spray.

Communication People could get about more i.e. specialists could meet at conferences and seminars. Newspapers and improved channels of communication meant ideas could be shared. For example Chadwick and Snows reports.
