3 3 EPA’s 2004 study flawed EPA proved risks of benzene and other toxics in ground water EPA proved problem of unwanted methane migration to the surface EPA’s Peer Panel influenced by the industry YET EPA concludes fracking is safe, does not pose a risk to drinking water, and further study is unwarranted

4 4 2010 -- EPA now conducting another study of the impacts of fracking EPA will investigate how fracking affects drinking water -- budgeted at $3.5 million over 2 years Study to be transparent and peer reviewed, 4 hearings EPA’s study is based on life cycle impacts of fracking fluids Impacts from water demands and the air pathways included

5 5 How do oil and gas drilling & fracking practices cause risks? Bad well construction (“bad wells gone bad”) Spills – especially spills of undiluted fluids Leaking Pits – about 2/3 of the frack fluids are returned to the reserve pit Production fluids mismanagement - frack fluids are either re-injected, treated and discharged, or land managed

6 6 Systemic risks of fracking “Good wells gone bad” -pathway allowed by brittle geology or an unplugged abandoned well Air pathways from pits and condensate tanks to a community or ecosystem Evaporation of toxic frack fluids and VOCs from reserve pits VOCs could later condense and ‘rain’ on an ecosystem
