2 © 2008 Tunstall Group Ltd 2 Caring for mum with dementia Barbara is in her 80s, has moderate dementia and lives alone. She had been walking away from her home during the night and her family had been keeping a close watch on her and escorting her home on occasions. In addition she had been leaving pans on the cooker unattended This was causing a great deal of stress for the family. Number of people with dementia in UK 700k 1.7m Solution A telecare package was installed including a “property exit sensor” which sent an alert to the 24 hr Careline. The operators managed to reassure Barbara and encourage her to shut the door and come back into the house 87 times in a 3 month period. Only on 3 occasions were the family called out. Cost savings a saving of approx £34,000 has been made in this case, by allowed Barbara to avoid entering residential care for 16 months. 4 © 2008 Tunstall Group Ltd 4 Barnsley’s approach to Individual Budgets One of 13 local authorities to pilot the Individual Budgets programme from June 2006 to December 2008 160 individuals are using Individual Budgets in Barnsley It is making real improvements that are seen and felt by older people and those with long term needs in all aspects of their lives. 5 © 2008 Tunstall Group Ltd 5 How do you make telecare integral not marginal Vital components to integrating telecare in IB strategy Training –Developed telecare training courses for all care managers –Objective being to enable them to prescribe telecare as part of the overall care package Information –Leaflets provided on telecare for both the carer and the cared for –Provided information for family and friends Referral route –Agreement in place with Central Call (Barnsley’s response centre) who administer the telecare equipment –Procedures in place to ensure management of visits Service provider relationship –The national network of response centres is already in place to make this work on a local basis

6 © 2008 Tunstall Group Ltd 6 Barnsley’s housing and support development Barnsley is using telecare in new build housing schemes Used the Learning Disability Development Fund and Housing Corporation Grant to convert an old property with telecare into 5 self contained flats for people with learning disabilities. The core telecare system can then be personalised to individual tenants needs and purchased through their Individual Budget

Yes - Traditional support would be the other option Case study: An elderly gentleman who was prone to falling His family had to be around at all times or a paid sitting service had to be available to ensure his safety What if he had a telecare falls package?

11 © 2008 Tunstall Group Ltd 11 Stephen – telecare has enabled independence THE CHALLENGE Stephen in his early 20s has epilepsy and suffers around 1-2 seizures a week usually at night His mother wants him to live at home and he wants his independence THE SOLUTION We installed a telecare epilepsy package: –epilepsy sensor placed in the bed to alert of seizures at night –fall detector (body worn device) for during the day Both would send an alert to mum (and 24 hour monitoring centre) so she could go to her son’s aid and provide the necessary medication, should he have a seizure.
