MFL

MFL French This is a link to the shared area where you will find all the F & H Listening and Reading papers for the last few years, as wel as the Listening files and mark schemes. Attempt the papers without dictionary or answers then mark them with the mark scheme. Go over your incorrect answers and with the use of the dictionary note down those words and phrases which you either misunderstood or did not recognise. Make a note of new/unknown vocabulary. It is better to do one or two papers (Reading & Listening) thoroughly than to do all of them in a rush without extracting vocabulary and understanding where you went wrong.

Design and Technology: Resistant Materials

Useful Websites www.technologystudent.com http://www.bbc.co.uk/education/subjects/zg9d7ty Revision Guides You should all have a revision guide by this point. It is a really useful tool to help prepare you for the exam but do not rely on it alone and do not simply read the contents. Try making brief notes and flash cards that summarise each topic. If you feel you need to know more, refer to the websites listed above. Together, they have everything you could possibly need to know.

Moodle – Virtual Learning Environment Once you have access to Moodle, via the school website, you will find lots of helpful documents to help your revision. Most of these can already be found in the Design and Technology shared area at school. Past Papers You can access these through the AQA website or by clicking on the link below. http://www.aqa.org.uk/subjects/design-and-technology/gcse/design- and-technology-resistant-materials-4560/past-papers-and-mark- schemes Practice as many of the questions as you can. If you get stuck do not simply look at the mark scheme. Attempt the question first and then try your revision guide or one of the websites listed previously.

Section A – Design Focus For section A of your exam you will need to research the needs of the elderly whilst gardening. This is a very broad topic and can cover all manner of products. Researching the theme before the exam is the only way to be ready! You will need to respond in the following ways Writing a design specification and justifying why each statement is important. You normally need to produce three of these but it could be more so always read the question carefully. Generating a range of design ideas that solve a problem linked to the topic above. Marks are usually awarded for creativity and typically 3 to 5 ideas are needed but, again, read the question carefully. Developing your best idea through sketching and annotation. This must show awareness of materials, construction techniques, important dimensions and finishes that could be applied. Evaluating you chosen design against the points you made in the specification in the first part of the question. This type of product is likely to need careful consideration for safety and could potentially include mechanisms to help make gardening tasks easier to do. Revise Mechanisms!

Helpful topics This is not a complete list! It is to try to draw your attention to some topics that caught out previous year groups! Health and safety – including warning signs and labels (including the lion symbol for safe children’s toys - this is not in your revision guide though) Smart and modern materials Adhesives and their safe use/correct use Computer Aided Design Computer Aided Manufacture Sustainability Material Properties Environmental impact of materials Making techniques and processes Mechanisms/mechanical advantage (gears, levers etc.) Circuits/circuit symbols (think electronics in science!) Basic electrical wiring – do you know how to wire a plug? They asked this once even though it is not on your syllabus!
