Towards the Cloud! Ian Osborne Director, Digital Systems KTN, Intellect

About the Speaker Digital Systems KTN Director, Digital Systems KTN Technology Strategy Board programme Launched October 2009 “IT Knowledge Transfer Network” Cyber-Security Location and Timing Scalable Computing Built upon the foundations of Grid Computing Now! KTN Focused on Cloud/Utility, Sustainability and Distributed Applications/Services Working since October 2009 on G-Cloud & Apps Store Towards the Cloud2

— SHANE ROBISON, EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT & CHIEF STRATEGY AND TECHNOLOGY OFFICER, HP "Software as a service is just the tip of the iceberg. We’re moving to a future state where everything will be delivered to you as a service." Towards the Cloud 3

Agenda Towards IT as a Service Cloud Computing - G-Cloud Programme Application Trends Challenges Conclusions Towards the Cloud4

Where are we heading? 5 Old WorldNew World Static Silo Physical Manual Application Dynamic Shared Virtual Automated Service Towards the Cloud

IT Architecture Trends 6 Resource Sharing Flexibility Range of solutions Infrastructure Consolidation Virtual Computing Service Oriented Architecture Services Towards the Cloud The Cloud!  On Demand Service  Ubiquitous Network Access  Location Independent Resource Pooling  Rapid Elasticity  Measured Service The Cloud!  On Demand Service  Ubiquitous Network Access  Location Independent Resource Pooling  Rapid Elasticity  Measured Service

Delivery Model SaaS To use the provider’s applications running on a cloud infrastructure and accessible from various client devices through a thin client interface such as a Web browser  Citizen Engagement (Wikis, Blogs, Data.gov)  Government Productivity (Cloud based tools)  Business Enablement (Salesforce.com)  Enterprise Applications (Core Mission & Business Services  Citizen Engagement (Wikis, Blogs, Data.gov)  Government Productivity (Cloud based tools)  Business Enablement (Salesforce.com)  Enterprise Applications (Core Mission & Business Services PaaS To deploy onto the cloud infrastructure consumer- created applications using programming languages and tools supported by the provider (e.g., java, python,.Net)  Database and Database Management Systems  Developer / Testing Tools  Virtual Environments  Database and Database Management Systems  Developer / Testing Tools  Virtual Environments IaaS To provision processing, storage, networks, and other fundamental computing resources where the consumer is able to deploy and run arbitrary software, which can include operating systems and applications Computing Storage Application hosting Computing Storage Application hosting Model Capability Provided Example Services Towards the Cloud7

Deployment Model Overview PRIVATE CLOUD Operated solely for an organization. PRIVATE CLOUD Operated solely for an organization. COMMUNITY CLOUD Shared by several organizations and supports a specific community that has shared concerns COMMUNITY CLOUD Shared by several organizations and supports a specific community that has shared concerns PUBLIC CLOUD Made available to the general public or a large industry group and is owned by an organization selling cloud services. PUBLIC CLOUD Made available to the general public or a large industry group and is owned by an organization selling cloud services. HYBRID CLOUD Composition of two or more clouds (private, community, or public) that remain unique entities but are bound together by standardized or proprietary technology that enables data and application portability HYBRID CLOUD Composition of two or more clouds (private, community, or public) that remain unique entities but are bound together by standardized or proprietary technology that enables data and application portability Towards the Cloud8

Towards the Cloud11

Towards the Cloud12

Challenges Issues:- Life beyond the “firewall” Physical Security Network Access Latency Quality of Service Service Level Agreements Data Security Provisioning Models Proprietary Interfaces Application Support Scalability Models Software Licensing Models http://www.eecs.berkeley.edu/Pubs/TechRpts/2009/EECS-2009-28.html Steve Staso Opportunities:- Reduced Capital Outlay Purchase Flexibility Instant Access Reduced Unit Costs Scale Up, and Down! Elasticity in Usage Costs Offloaded Power/Carbon Costs Interoperable Open Services Towards the Cloud13

Application Trends Virtualisation and scale-out versus silos and user limits Dynamics of operation Few viable licensing models SaaS vs Installed Software Multi-tenanted versus multiple installs Zero Maintenance Public Cloud or Private Network based Security Service Levels Service-based versus integrated applications Data Management and Disaster Recovery Rise of the Applications Store (iPhone, Microsoft, Google, G-Cloud) Towards the Cloud14

Getting Started Consolidate your list of applications Reduce duplication, improve efficiency Look to adopt Virtualisation in house Increase utilisation, flexibility – available capacity? Look at options to out-SaaS “standard” business services E-mail, CRM, Payroll, HR, Project Management, etc. Look at in-SaaS options for core business applications Cloud enabled business applications suite Look at options to extend your own Data Centre Cloud bursting for peak demand Disaster Recovery Services Towards the Cloud15

Security A Cloud Service Provider is just that:- Due diligence on the company (CIF*) ISO 27000 and SAS 70 Service Level Agreements Data Security Plan Application Escrow or Portability Network Access Security Billing Mechanisms/Controls Location of Data Storage Disaster Recovery Plan Towards the Cloud16 *FAST Cloud Industry Forum

Conclusions Cloud is over-hyped but over here and it’s rise as an utility approach to computing is irresistible Cloud Service Providers will emerge to provide any shape, form or function of services from infrastructure to information Customers will expect access to services on-demand Businesses of all sizes will require access to dynamically provisioned services The benefits are being realised now, big and small! But, it doesn’t come for free: Expertise is required to guide potential XaaS adopters Expertise is required to design effective solutions Expertise will be required to troubleshoot Towards the Cloud17
