HOW CAN I BRING A THEME IN THE NOVEL INTO A LARGER SCOPE? Through Comparison Freedom of the individual vs. freedom of Prague (political scope) Escapism as exhibited by Tomas vs. Escapism as Nihilist/Existentialist Idea (philosophical scope) Treatment of women in the novel vs. Cultural value feminism (literary perspective/literary scope) Characters’ Burdens vs. Burdens of the Czech people during soviet occupation (Historical scope)

1.Explain the misunderstanding which takes place between Franz and Sabina at the beginning of “Words Misunderstood.” What does each person want out of the relationship? What does their misunderstanding in the relationship reveal about them as individuals? Support with one piece of evidence from the text. 2.“Now perhaps we are in a better position to understand the abyss separating Sabina and Franz: he listened eagerly to the story of her life and she was equally eager to hear the story of his, but although they had a clear understanding of the logical meaning of the words they exchanged, they failed to hear the semantic susurrus of the river flowing through them.” Explain the narrator’s analysis here. 3.How do Tomas and Franz’s definition of a woman differ from each other? How does the narrator’s definition differ from Tomas and Franz’s definition? 4.In the debate of “weight” and “lightness,” what do Franz and Sabina represent? How would you define their “weight” or “lightness?” Support with paraphrase from the text. 5.Discuss the occurrence Eternal Return in this section of the novel thus far.

WORDS MISUNDERSTOOD (DISCUSSION QUESTIONS) * Submit these questions at the end of discussion for a grade. Save the questions in your folder as a prewrite for topic number 1 of the in class, supervised writing.

FRIDAY AGENDA Today’s Agenda CTW (Topic Assigned) To Do

GROUPS AND GROUP TOPICS 1.Group 1: Private Identity (Wednesday) 2.Group 2: Public Identity (Wednesday) 3.Group 3: Freedom (Wednesday) 4.Group 4: Constraint (Thursday) 5.Group 5: Body (Friday) 6.Group 6: Soul (Friday)

CRITICAL THINKING WHEEL In your assigned groups, you will be given 60 instructional minutes to dissect your topic for parts 1, 2, and 3 of the book. You will move through the critical thinking wheel, in a thorough manner, examining your topic as it relates to the content of the the novel. Note that each topic is not “cut and dry” or “simple” by any means. These are ideas which are developed throughout the first part of the book and the content of your presentation should not be limited to “one, single, simple way” of examining your topic, but rather, explore the dimensions of the topic (dare I say the specific, definite, broad, and abstract?) You will need evidence from the text for each section of the wheel (with the exception of the Information/Inference slices, which should respond to each other, work together) You will present your topic next week to the class. Your presentation should be between 8-10 minutes. Each person should speak, and take responsibility for portions of the project. Presentation should be interactive- and ask students to interact with the text. If you are absent on the day of your presentation, your group must make up the presentation at lunch the following day. Points will be deducted for groups who are “no shows” 70% category (Reading assessment)

CRITICAL THINKING WHEEL 1. Purpose: What are Kundera’s purposes for including this topic in the novel? (At least two TPR statements – these ideas should control the entire presentation and be an anchor for topic consistency in the presentation) 2. Point of view: Relate the topic to a larger cultural or contextual consideration (possibly through a comparison like we talked about yesterday) 3. Information/Inference (These two sections work together. The information seeks to identify the topic in the text, and elaborate on WHY the topic is developed in the evidence chosen, while the inferences/interpretations are the text analysis/general analysis for the info. Should relate back to “purpose” 4. Assumptions: What are Kundera’s assumptions about this topic, and where in the text do you clearly see these assumptions being developed? 5. Implications: If what Kundera says about the topic is true, then… (at least 2 well-developed and justified implications) 6. Concepts: What are the political, social, historical, cultural concepts associated with the reader’s understanding of this topic? 7. Question at issue: What lingering questions is the reader left with about this topic and WHY?
