Using the new platforms to amplify the health center voice online The importance of social media in an age of digital advocacy

Social Media for Advocacy “Social media is a conversation not a monologue.” With creativity, persistence social media is a tremendous tool for engaging legislators and influencing support of the Health Center movement. Think about it… 100% of the Senate is active on Facebook or Twitter 97% of the House is active on Facebook or Twitter More than 75% of Congressional staffers "agree" or "strongly agree" with the statement "social media enabled us to have more meaningful interactions with constituents."

How To… Facebook Keep Facebook posts short and conversational, and include an image whenever possible. The most effective way to utilize your Facebook account is to post regularly. A general rule to follow could be to post at least one Facebook post a day. Ask people to share your content through Facebook. Include links on Facebook to direct people back to your website or CFAHC Share content from the CFAHC Facebook page Tag your MOC when you are posting about Health Center investment stories Twitter Share links to op-eds/ LTEs, images from events, and other information in 140 characters or less. Tweet directly to MOCs, media outlets, etc. to spark conversation about your health center. Tweet at least 2-4 times per day Tweet directly to members of Congress with the action you want them to take or to say thank you. Use the #AccessistheAnswer hashtag. Retweet content from @CFAHC

Influencing Legislators: Cheap & Easy A regular citizen can start a policy conversation with almost half of Congress right now, simply by going to their Facebook or Twitter page and asking a question. 84% Senators and Representatives are more inclined to use social media than they were in the past. 76% Staff generally feel social media have improved relationships between constituents and Congress. Thirty or fewer similar comments on a social media post are enough to get an office’s attention, but they need to be posted quickly or they may not be seen. Social media posts by constituents can influence undecided Senators and Representatives, but staff generally do not feel social media posts provide enough information to identify constituents.

Social Media Sharing

1.Find the right person 2.Create/execute a feasible plan 3.Make social media measurable or a part of your overall organizational strategy Developing Social Media Strategy
