Training of Teachers on School Safety Target Groups –High School Teachers –Coastal Districts

Learning needs Teachers need to be trained in all stages of disaster management i.e- preparedness, Response, post disaster rehabilitation Past Disasters have shown that children are very vulnerable to disasters. Hence. Knowledge has to be transmitted to them through the teachers Need for preparation of school safety plan including building level and outside disasters

Course Targets Teachers will be able to train their students in different aspects of disaster management Trained teachers will be able to contribute to development of more suitable curriculum for students They will be trained in preparation of school safety plans

Scenario development Multi-hazard profile for the training The possible hazards for a coastal school –Cyclones –Floods –Tsunami –Earthquake –Hailstorm –Vector borne hazards –Industrial hazards –Man made disasters like bomb blast, riots etc

Modules of e-learning components 1.Concepts of disaster management 2.Vulnerability profile 3.Types of disasters 4.Preparation of School DM plan 5.Institutional and legal aspects of DM 6.Monitoring and evaluation

1-Concepts of disaster management Disaster Hazard Vulnerability Risk Capacity Building Planning, Preparedness, Prevention, Mitigation Relief, Restoration, Rehabilitation, Recovery End of activity exercise

District administration, Fire Service, police etc Follow up- –On-line follow up –Identification of group leaders who will contact group members by e-mail, telephone, chat

Components Monitoring & evaluation- –through exercises/tests –1 day face to face interaction –Assignment or project work Coaching- Classical one to one coaching may not be possible under the programme as the course covers a large number of teachers

Planning Inputs –High school teachers should have basic computer knowledge –A minimum teaching experience –Difficult for teachers to come for an exclusive class room training programme on DM Activities –Face to face interaction –Printed Course materials through correspondence –Chatting –Pin boards –Project works –Sharing of innovative ideas by all –Field study reports

Planning…. Outputs –Bridging the gaps in knowledge in DM –Developing an appreciation for DM and school safety –Taking the technology learning to the level of schools – Accepting responsibility as trainers for students in DM Outcome –Creating a technology platform for dissemination and sharing of knowledge even other than disaster management –High schools tanking up the role of technology centers –Schools could be disaster management centers with trained teachers for dissemination of disaster early warning, relief information sharing etc Impact –A new dimension is created in training and capacity building –The course design could be used for other development activities
