1 Integrating HOTS in Literature Instruction Overview of Literature Program ( Adapted from Online course) After reading this presentation, teachers will be: familiar with the rationale of the literature program. familiar with the details of the new national literature program.

2 Objectives of the Course To familiarize teachers with the rationale for the literature program. To provide theoretical and practical knowledge of HOTS and how to integrate them with the teaching of literature. To provide information and practice for assessing tasks that integrate HOTS and teaching literature. To provide information and practice for evaluating and adapting literature from course books. To provide a forum for presenting and discussing ideas, problems, concerns regarding the integration of HOTS with your literature teaching.

4 Rationale of the Literature Program To promote the achievement of the benchmarks for the Domain of Appreciation of Literature and Culture.Domain of Appreciation of Literature and Culture. To ensure that literature is given due emphasis in the teaching of English. To encourage and promote the reading, enjoyment and appreciation of literature. To create opportunities that foster familiarity with and respect for other cultures. To raise students’ awareness of the interrelationship between language, literature, and culture.

5 Rationale for the Literature Program To provide opportunities for students to apply higher-order thinking skills in other domains as well as their own lives. To facilitate the interpretation and analysis of pieces of literature by integrating higher- order thinking skills with the teaching of literature.

6 The New Literature Modules The new literature modules are for 4 and 5 point classes only. The new modules will REPLACE modules D (for 4 points) and F (for 5 points). Students will be assessed either by the LOG or an EXAM. Teachers will begin the program for the new modules with 10 th grade 5 point students, for the school year of 2010 – 2011, and 4 point students in 2011-2012.

8 The Log and the Exam Teachers may choose between these two options, BUT it is best if decided school- wide. The learning process is the SAME for the Log and the Exam. The DIFFERENCE is in the assessment.

9 The Log What is the log? The log is a journal which provides evidence of the students’ learning. It enhances students’ awareness of their own thought processes through various tasks. It helps students gain insight into strategies for analyzing literature. It shows students’ increasing involvement in the learning process.

10 The Log How is the log assessed? The grade for the log is given by the teacher. Teachers will be paid for marking the logs. (Grades are submitted on the form 9540.)

11 The Log Who chooses the literary texts for the log? Teachers will choose the literary texts based on given criteria from the English Inspectorate. Schools will be required to get approval of the program from the English Inspectorate.

12 The Log What are the criteria for choosing a literary piece? Authenticity - text has not been simplified Language - written originally in English Literary merit - recognized and published author, enriches, encourages response, multiple meanings Universality – themes span place and time Length – comparable to texts from exam program

13 The Exam The exam will assess lower-order and higher-order thinking skills. The number of and type of literary texts are the same as for the log. The learning process is the same as for the log.

14 Choice Options for the Exam (4 points) Teachers choose Option One or Option Two. Each option consists of: Four short stories Three poems There is NO play for the four point program

15 Choice Options for the Exam (5 points) Teachers choose from a play or a novel. Teachers choose Option One or Option Two. Each option consists of: One play Three short stories Four poems The literary texts will be changed every few years.
