1 CHECK AGAINST DELIVERY

2 Why Sport Tourism?

3 Overall Tourism in Windsor-Essex At our peak in 1999, Windsor and Essex County attracted 9.1 million visitors and $805 million in spending. These figures have declined by more than half, to 3.5 million visitors and $379 million in spending in 2010. Total visitors to our region and tourism spending have declined year to year since 1999.

This compares to a 0.7% decrease in tourism demand for the Canadian tourism industry as a whole, thus continuing sport tourism’s trend of being one of the fastest growing industry segments within Canada’s tourism industry.

9 Regional Approach “I think we missed chances to grow and develop by being adversarial in the past,“ said Tecumseh Mayor Gary McNamara, one of seven new mayors voted into office in November. “We need to look at ourselves as a regional force rather than at eight separate entities. We can’t act independently anymore” -The Windsor Star, April 12, 2004 May 16, 2012 Presentation to Essex County Council

18 County Benefits From the last quarterly board meeting of the Economic Development Corp.: The last major marketing campaign centred around the Grown Right Here Campaign, their biggest to date, complete with a special section of the newspaper, valued at tens of thousands of dollars in advertising. One of the two cluster developments is destined for Leamington/Kingsville. The newest office opened is the small business centre in the County in Essex. The newest staff hired is for additional staff for the County. The most recent announcement of a new company is in Amherstburg. The last major hosting of a visiting business delegation was in the County this past month. The largest issues staff have been assisting with are county related – the horseracing issue, and the hydro issue in Leamington and Kingsville. The last three municipal meetings have been with Tecumseh, LaSalle, and the County CAO’s. The next Ministry visit is with OMAF, with Ag Invest staff coming the first week of November.

20 Leamington Mayor John Paterson said a new spirit of cooperation across municipalities has been “long overdue”. Paterson said he feels that in the past, the city and the county have adopted a “protectionist stance” when it comes to sharing costs of services. He said he hopes to see more of the equal participation embodied by regional agencies such as Essex-Windsor paramedic service. “I mean, it just makes good, common sense to do them jointly.” - The Windsor Star, December 15, 2010

51 London- Investing in our Volunteers "Volunteers are a critical part of any of these events. You couldn't do it without it and what was great for us was that the legacy from the 2001 Canada Summer Games have allowed this community to move forward over the years and to build on that to get other events that are international in scope where you need even a bigger presence of volunteers, whether it is small or large, the volunteers are a critical component.”

55 "If I heard one thing from delegates, it was, 'We gotta come back here, we gotta bring our families," said outgoing Association of Municipalities of Ontario president Peter Hume. "That waterfront is spectacular... I'd love to have your gardens," said Thunder Bay's Mayor Lynn Peterson, whose city of 110,000 is about to invest more than $120 million into its lakefront over the next two years.

56 Doug Reycraft, mayor of the 6,000 residents of Glencoe also raved about the river. He used to live in Windsor, back in the 1960s when its downtown shoreline was a "dirty, messy" riot of railway tracks. Mayor Eddie Francis said it was important to get the political leaders from across the province to Windsor "so we could share our stories. "A lot of them were pleasantly surprised," he said.

57 The TSC’s initiative to bid for the 2012 Ontario Summer Games reflects its ability to build collaborative relationships with community stakeholders and partners. Supporting and joining the bid for the 2012 OSG provides a unique opportunity for the City to enhance its relationship with the TSC and to engage with and mobilize a diverse range of community based sport organizations. Toronto

58 The 2010 Ontario Summer Games were a great success, highlighting the achievements of some of the province’s top young athletes. The games received tremendous support from local residents through the efforts of the 1,100 volunteers. An estimated 6,000 out of town participants, family members and spectators attended the games is Sudbury, staying for an average of 3.2 nights. Their spending, in combination with that of the athletes and the event organizers, totaled $2.5 million. The resultant increases in net economic activity (GDP) was $3.0 million throughout the Province. The total industry output (or gross economic activity) supported by the event was $6.1 million, supporting 55.2 jobs and $2.1 million in wages and salaries throughout the Province. Tax revenues supported by spending associated with the Ontario Summer Games totalled $1.3 million Sudbury

59 Mississauga Hosting the 2016 Ontario Summer Games satisfies recommendations in the Sport Tourism Strategy to seek “multi- discipline sport events that showcase Mississauga’s premiere facilities and parks to sport governing bodies”. This event would add to Mississauga’s experience as a host of major sports events and build a legacy of experienced volunteers and resources while expanding sport educational and leadership opportunities with a view to future event acquisitions. Following the successful hosting of the 2015 Pan Am Games, the momentum would continue to 2016 providing Mississauga even further exposure as an event friendly host community.

60 Together we’ve rebuilt our relationship [A 50 metre pool] is basically an area where sports tourism would, I think, blossom.” said [Tecumseh Mayor Gary] McNamara. “It makes sense to put the bricks and mortar together, as a region.” - CBC News Online, October 13, 2010 “If we’re going to attract business to the area, we have a much better chance of doing it by working together.” Tom Bain, Warden of Essex County - The Windsor Star, December 15, 2010
