Project Wisdom SSMS News & Announcements Project Wisdom #10 10/23/13 Mind if I Don’t Smoke?

Good morning, South Seminole. This is Dr. Coleman-Baker, your Principal, with a few words of wisdom.. Ever heard someone say, "Do you mind if I smoke?" Sounds courteous, but smoking isn’t courteous. Smoking creates problems you’ve probably never stopped to think about. Every day, smokers are diagnosed with cancer and other smoking-related diseases. Think about the negative impact that diagnosis has on the family and friends of the smoker. And then there’s the impact on our communities. Medical care for smokers costs a lot of money so everyone’s insurance costs go up. Then there’s lost time at work due to smoking-related illness. That cuts into company profits. And cigarettes cost a lot of money that could be spent in positive ways.

With something to think about, this is Dr. Coleman- Baker. Make it a great day… or not. The choice is yours. Famous comedian Groucho Marx once asked a group of smokers: Do you mind if I don’t smoke? If you know someone who smokes, encourage him or her to quit, and if someone offers you a cigarette, be courteous and simply say "No thanks."

Learning Goal: Students will understand the ripple effects of choosing to smoke.

 Brainstorm all of the reasons why smoking is a bad habit. What is the difference between a habit and an addiction? Does smoking impact only the smoker? Explain.  With all the information available about how detrimental smoking is to a person's health and well-being, why do you think young people continue to start smoking?

 Explain how smoking impacts job performance.  7. Explain how and why smoking impacts insurance rates and medical costs.

Awareness: to make aware of something, to know that it exists Adolescence: the time between being a child and becoming an adult

 Smoking creates problems you’ve probably never stopped to think about. These problems ripple out into the lives of friends and family members and our community. It’s important to raise awareness about the dangers of smoking and the problems related to it.  American actress and singer Hillary Duff once said, "I think smoking’s gross." Do you agree or disagree? Explain.

 Do you think that when young people see their entertainment heroes smoke, it has an impact on their choices about smoking? Explain why.  ____________________________________________ ____________________________________________ ____________________________________________

 When we smoke, we are not being disrespectful just to ourselves, but we are also being disrespectful of those around us. When we respect ourselves — care about ourselves — we don’t want to pollute our bodies and the environment with cigarette smoke. We want to keep our bodies clean, strong, and healthy. Some kids start smoking because they have a hard time saying "no" when offered a cigarette.  If you make the decision to be respectful of yourself and your body, it will be much easier to say, "Do you mind if I don’t smoke?" That’s the truly respectful thing to do for yourself and everyone around you.
