1 NEWSLETTER Ms. Campbell Ms. Holt Ms. Harper Spelling / Vocabulary This week’s spelling and vocabulary words are from the Greek Roots Workbook. Test Friday! Captivate Captive Captivity Recapture Statement Stationary Statue Understate Anchorage Public School Monday, February 18, 2013 Reading/Language/Writing Students are finishing up skills on cause and effect and editing/proofreading. Students will begin reading “Bridge to Terabithia” each day as a class novel. The remaining portion of the book not read will be assigned over Winter Break. Students will discuss this story upon return from winter break and will have a study guide. An AR test will be given on Friday, March 8 th and this will count as a test grade in reading. Math Monday in math we will be using all of the knowledge and skills that we have gained surrounding mixed numbers and improper fractions. We will be solving real world problems with mixed numbers. Students need to be able to regroup when necessary in subtraction problems. They also need to be able to write their answers in simplest terms. Tuesday & Wednesday we will be looking at situations where it makes sense to multiply fractions by a whole number. Thursday & Friday will be devoted to our Fraction Assessment. It will primarily cover mixed numbers, improper fractions, and multiplying fractions by whole numbers. Science PHYSICAL SCIENCE is finally here! Students will begin by studying the three states of matter and differentiating between the three. Students will also learn the physical and chemical properties of matter and how it can be measured. Social Studies This week in social studies we will be finishing our unit on Kentucky’s economy. On Monday, February 18 th, the students will receive a study guide for the unit test on economy, education, and transportation. Tuesday, I will be giving the take-home/open book section of the test. It consists of one open response and one on demand (response to text). On Wednesday, February 20 th, the students will be given the multiple choice and fill-in sections on their unit test. There are 20 questions on this section. Students will be writing a feature article on consumerism. If you have any questions or need to make a change, please let me know. 2.Students have a new Study Island Assignment for Earth Science added to their account. Completion of all five lessons by the due date will count for extra credit in Science.
