Do Now!!! So far we learned after the War of 1812 members of Congress adopted the American System and the Marshall Court strengthened the power of the federal government. Now, we will be looking at the Presidency of James Monroe and events that occurred in this time period. Many historians referred to Monroe’s Presidency as the “Era of Good Feelings”. Why do you think they call it this? Make a list of potential reasons.

James Monroe’s Presidency (1817-1825) 1.Politicians worked together to better the nation. 2.The nation experienced its first depression 3.The nation acquired new territory. 4.The nation became the protector of North and South America.

The Era of Good Feelings Time period after the War of 1812, where one political party (Jeffersonian- Republicans) dominated the government and politicians worked together to better the nation. Politicians supported the American System. Monroe’s cabinet consisted of Jeffersonian-Republicans and ex-Federalists.

Panic of 1819 The nation experienced a depression – time where there are a few jobs, goods are expensive, and people lose their homes or businesses.

Panic of 1819 Cause: – Europeans bought less American made goods following the end of the Napoleonic Wars – European banks forced American banks to pay back loans. Result: Many people could not afford goods or lost their jobs, homes or businesses.

Adams-Onis Treaty or Transcontinental Treaty (1819) Agreement between Spain and the United States that gave the U.S. the territory of Florida and claims to the Pacific Northwest (Present-day Oregon and Washington).

Adams-Onis Treaty or Transcontinental Treaty (1819) Cause: Monroe told General Andrew Jackson to go into Florida to stop Seminole (Native Americans in Florida) raids into Georgia. – Jackson conquered the whole territory and upset Spain and members of Monroe’s cabinet and Congress. He also executed 2 British citizens, who, he said, provoked the Seminoles to attack Georgia. – John Q. Adams, Secretary of State, used the attacks of Native Americans as leverage to get Spain to give up Florida and its claims in North America, since they failed to uphold a previous treaty. (The Pinckney Treaty)

Adams-Onis Treaty or Transcontinental Treaty Result: First time U.S. territory stretched from the Atlantic to Pacific Ocean.

The Monroe Doctrine Statement made by James Monroe in 1823 that told European nations to stay out of North and South America. (Written by John Quincy Adams but Monroe gets the credit!)

The Monroe Doctrine Cause: European nations were trying to recapture lost colonies or create new colonies in North and South America. Russia Spain

The Monroe Doctrine Result: The U.S. became the protector of nations in North and South America.

Make a T-Chart in the space below. The left column should be “Era of Good Feelings” the right column should be “Era of not so Good Feelings”. Review Monroe’s Presidency and evaluate whether events in his presidency fall under either of the those categories. Before you leave…
